Minnesota’s fishing opener on Saturday May 13th is a big deal. It’s been celebrated annually since 1948, when the first Governor’s Fishing Opener was conducted at Wahkon on Mille Lacs Lake. Every May on the Saturday two weeks before Memorial Day, half-a-million Minnesotans take to their lakes, rivers and streams to kick off the walleye, sauger and northern pike seasons.

Rember too: Early open water is cold, and potentially deadly. While the best life jacket is the one you wear, inflatable life jackets are not the best option on cold water (including atop the ice). Cold water of less than 40 degrees can hinder the performance of self-inflating life jackets. A float coat or foam-filled life jacket is a better option for early open water fishing and boating. It’s best to save the self-inflating life jackets for warm weather. Wearing a proper fitting life jacket that is in good condition is the best way to survive an unexpected fall into cold water.

Join us for an exploration of the German Bauhaus Design Movement through the art of hand block printing! Explore the color and design shapes behind the iconic Bauhaus Movement (1919-1933) and create your own Bauhaus-style design utilizing a series of hand carved wooden blocks from the instructor’s collection. This is an intermediate level class, open to students who have already taken Intro to the Art of Hand Block Printing.

Katrina Ulrich is a textile artist and owner of Marigold Arts & Adventures, where she keeps busy teaching classes, leading tours, and creating her own work. She spent her childhood in Madagascar and India, and studied hand block printing for five years in Jaipur, India with printing masters. She works in her home printing studio, where she has a collection of over 150 blocks to use—and leads socially conscious travel tours to India.

No plans for Derby Days? We’ve got you covered! Local fashion icon Grant Whittaker is styling a Martin Patrick 3 Derby-Inspired Fashion Show hosted by Four Seasons Hotel Minneapolis on Saturday, May 6th benefitting Children’s Hospital Association. Show hair and makeup provided by Haus Salon.

What is better than a fashion show? A fashion show that raises funds to support kids and families in our local community! Doors open at 3 pm, the show begins at 3:45 pm, and the horses are off to the races at 5 pm. The party ends one hour past the Derby Race. Don your best Derby inspired cocktail attire! Passed apps will be provided to enjoy and each guest will leave with a signature gift.
