Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting

Split Rock Lighthouse: This annual event commemorates the sinking of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald and the loss of her 29 crew members on November 10th, 1975. It is also a time to reflect on the memory of all lives lost in Great Lakes shipwrecks.

The lighthouse, fog signal building, and visitor center will be open. Costumed interpreters will greet visitors and provide historic site and shipwreck information. Throughout the afternoon, visitors can view a film about the Edmund Fitzgerald in the visitor center.

At 4:30 pm, the lighthouse will close temporarily while the names of the crew members are read to the tolling of a ship’s bell. Following the ceremony, the beacon will be lit, and the tower will be open again to tour.

Beacon Lighting

For nearly 60 years, the light flashed each night at 10-second intervals across more than 20 miles of Lake Superior’s navigable waters. Today, U.S. Coast Guard regulations prohibit the light being used for maritime traffic, but the beacon is still turned on occasionally for ceremonial and maintenance purposes.

We’re excited to announce our next special exhibition, “In Our Hands: Native Photography, 1890 to Now.”

Minneapolis Institute of Art: Enter into the vivid worlds of Native photography, as framed by generations of First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and Native American photographers themselves. Presenting over 150 photographs of, by, and for Indigenous people, “In Our Hands” welcomes all to see through the lens held by Native photographers.
Organized by a council of primarily Native artists, scholars, and knowledge sharers, in partnership with Mia curators, this sweeping exhibition traces the intersecting histories of photography and diverse Indigenous cultures from the Rio Grande to the Arctic Circle. Beautiful, complex, and surprising, these artworks celebrate the legacy of groundbreaking photographers and their influence on the medium today.
Native American Heritage Month is celebrated to honor the remarkable Native Americans each November who have contributed a lot to improve the character of the nation.

Como Conservatory: Fall Flower Show’s Sunken Gardens Opens

While many Minnesota gardens are winding down for the winter season, the Sunken Garden at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory will be in full bloom! Opened in October for the 108th Annual Fall Flower Show. The first half of the Fall Show’s inspiration this year is drawn from an underwater environment. Usual ‘spider’ and anemone mums in pink and white pastel colors will be accompanied by large and small succulents plants. There will be green sting ray colcassia, pink, purple and white scabiosa plants, and blue echinops.

The Sunken Garden reopens early November for the second half of the Fall Flower Show which will run through November 26th. The second half of the Fall Show will be a celebration of the Dia de los Muertos. Orange and yellow mums will be accented by bright magenta celosia as well as orange marigolds and multicolored osteospermum.
