Neighborhood Roots: Fulton Farmers Market – Minneapolis, MN

Welcome to Neighborhood Roots, the nonprofit that brings you Fulton, Kingfield and Nokomis Farmers Markets! More dates and new location for the Neighborhood Roots Winter Market. We will be outside all winter at our Fulton Farmers Market location (49th & Chowen).
Fulton Market sprouted from the desire of Fulton residents to establish a gathering place where neighbors could meet, socialize, shop locally, and thus strengthen their community. The Fulton Neighborhood Association was instrumental in the creation of the farmers market, providing the market with its founding grant in 2011 as it joined forces with the Kingfield Farmers Market.  Today, Fulton Farmers Market offers something for market-goers of all ages, be it a wide range of traditional & heirloom vegetables, delicious fruits, breads & pastries, weekly storytime, music, or other fun & educational programming.  We look forward to continuing to grow with the neighborhood.

OUR MISSION:

To bring neighbors together to buy, eat and learn about local food. We support local farmers and small businesses, promote vibrant community and affect important changes in food and agriculture policy.

OUR VALUES:

  • Relationships – To engage the community at all levels including neighbors, vendors, and businesses.  We strive to make the community stronger by being part of it.
  • Integrity – To be honest and transparent in the work we do, striving to create quality and a sustainable future for our community
  • Inclusiveness – We strive to create an active and engaged customer base, ensuring all are welcome and respected at our markets.

OUR HISTORY:

Kingfield Farmers Market was launched in 2001 in cooperation with the Kingfield Neighborhood Association.  After years of growth, the market emerged as its own nonprofit in 2008, becoming the foundation for what is now known as the organization Neighborhood Roots.

In 2010 the then-Kingfield Farmers Market board of directors was approached by the Fulton Neighborhood Association, asking for guidance in setting up a farmers market for that neighborhood. The Fulton Farmers Market was officially launched in 2011. With the creation of this new market, we expanded our educational programming, increased the professional capacity of the organization by adding a second staff person, and began offering EBT sales options.

2013 brought the launch of our yearly indoor winter market series, and an opportunity for vendors, customers, and community members to connect year-round.  Most recently, Nokomis Farmers Market opened as a pilot project in 2014, after years of discussion with the Hale-Page-Diamond Lake Community Association about their desire for a farmers market in their own neighborhood.

Each year our board of directors takes time to assess how we are doing as an organization and consider how we can continue to serve the community in more and better ways.  For more about our transition to the organizational name “Neighborhood Roots,” check out this blog post here.

My Gourd…Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off!

The journey was paved with potential hazards, but a Minnesota man emerged victorious from Monday’s Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off.

Anoka resident Travis Gienger drove 35 hours to Half Moon Bay, California, where his beastly 2,350-pound pumpkin bested all other gourds competing in the 47th annual event. He’ll take home a $16,450 prize and, in our opinion, canonical state hero status. “We didn’t pre-weigh this one, so we just really don’t know until we throw it on the scale,” Gienger told Mallermedia ahead of the event, which was spectator-free and live-streamed due to COVID-19.

His entry — nicknamed Tiger King, after the hit Netflix show — wound up tipping the scale by 176 more pounds than the second-place finisher. The Guinness World Record for Heaviest Pumpkin was set by Belgian man Mathias Willemijns in 2016: 2,624.6 pounds! Had Gienger broken that record, the payoff would have been an even $30,000 instead of the $7 per pound model. Gienger endured a nerve-racking drive to the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off. The veteran pumpkin farmer treated his eventual winner like a baby orca.

“We went to the extreme,” Gienger told local CBS affiliate KPIX 5. “We wrapped it in wet blankets, tarp over that, air tarp over that. We actually put it in dirt, then buckets of water. Every gas station we stopped, we watered it down.”

For some valuable perspective, the always reliable tonnage wonks at WeightOfStuff.com tell us the Liberty Bell, saltwater crocodiles, and the 1979 Volkswagen Beetle all weigh roughly 2,000 pounds, and therefore come in lighter than Gienger’s monster pumpkin.

We reached out to Gienger for additional enormous pumpkin deets, but did not immediately hear back. So just enjoy this triumphant photo:

The New, The Terrifying Abandoned Drive-Thru Halloween Experience In Minnesota This Year!

The New, The Terrifying Abandoned Drive-Thru Halloween Experience In Minnesota This Year!

The New Abandoned Drive -Thru takes place every Friday and Saturday thru November 1st. The Abandoned Hayride is a popular attraction that gets thousands of visitors every Halloween. It’s along Highway 212 in Chaska, right next to popular Scream Town. This year, the hayride is transformed into a new attraction built for 2020.

Fall is one of the best times of year, especially in Minnesota. It brings beautiful fall colors and perfectly crisp weather that make outdoor activities a blast. Some of the most popular things to do outside include pumpkin patches, hayrides, and corn mazes. But there are many other fall activities in Minnesota, including those of the scary variety. One of this best this year is the Abandoned Drive-Thru. This creepy drive-thru haunted experience is not to be missed this fall.

To enforce social distancing, the regular hayride has been replaced with a drive-through event that is just as terrifying. Cars will travel through a darkened forest filled with creepy sets, special effects, and more than a few costumed ghouls. It’s the only event of its kind in Minnesota. On most nights, the ticket booth opens at 6:30, with attractions ending at 10 or 11. You must buy your tickets in advance online. It’s also a good idea to arrive before your ticketed time so that things can run smoothly. The event lasts about 20 minutes. You’ll find more information about dates and times on the website.

If you’re looking for more information about what the Abandoned Drive-Thru might be like, check out the video below. If that doesn’t convince you to take part in this creepy event, we don’t know what will!

For more information on the Abandoned Drive-Thru, including tickets, dates, and more, check out the website and Facebook page.

As we age, our capacity for creativity increases but often goes untapped. In Mia’s new series of virtual classes designed for adults aged 55+, we’ll learn how painting can be a journey of self-determination during times of uncertainty and discover our personal capabilities while forming meaningful connections with other participants.
These virtual class sessions take place online from 2-4p.m. on 11/9, 11/16, 11/23, 11/30, 12/07. Step-by-step instructions and materials will be provided. No painting experience, perceived talent, or specific knowledge necessary. We will have fun in the process of discovery.
This virtual class is part of an ongoing collaboration between the Cultural Wellness Center and Mia with generous support provided by Aroha Philanthropies.
