ARENA DANCES – Minneapolis’ Premier Contemporary Dance Company. CANDY BOX is presented by Mathew Janczewski’s ARENA DANCES is an annual, eclectic gathering of performances, masterclasses, and work-in-progress showings. This year’s festival features a range in levels of experiences, aesthetics, and choreographic voices to offer a diverse array of treats!
“Establishing a career in dance can be challenging and isolating. That’s why coming together every year like this is so crucial; it creates the learning opportunities and personal connections people need in order to realize their full artistic potential. And by extending the support of the dance community to the next generation of talented makers, we help keep the scene vital and strong.” – Mathew Janczewski
ARENA DANCES is an internationally-renowned contemporary dance company founded in 1995 by artistic director and choreographer Mathew Janczewski in Minneapolis. Over the past 25 years, Janczewski has created over 35 works for ARENA performed nationally and internationally to critical acclaim. ARENA has toured extensively throughout the US including presentations at the Skirball Theater of NYU, City Center, and the Joyce SoHo in New York, The Repertory Project of Cleveland, and the SCUBA network in Philadelphia among others. Internationally, the company has twice been presented by Open Look International Summer Dance Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia as well as the 3rd TOUCH Festival in Arkanghelsk, Russia, and the L1 Dance Festival in Budapest, Hungary.
ARENA has been commissioned by numerous colleges and arts institutions such as The Walker Art Center, and been presented at top Twin Cities venues such as The Cowles Center, The Southern Theater, and The Fitzgerald Theater. Janczewski’s work has been recognized for excellence with a Sage Award for “Outstanding Performance”, as Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch”, and received support from The Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts, McKnight Foundation, Target Foundation, Archie D. & Bertha H. Walker Foundation, New England Foundation for the Arts, The Spanish Embassy of American Universities, Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
Janczewski is an ArtSage trainer and through ARENA’s Intergenerational Residency Program and Main Street Project (originally developed with the prestigious support of the New England Foundation for the Arts and National Dance Project), they continue to expand both performance and outreach programs – bridging the gap between youth and the elderly, and creating a dialogue about universal topics such as home, community, and connection.
Anti Racism Pledge
We are working with the City of New Haven’s Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism to commit to anti-racist work in our organization. In this partnership, we join a cohort of other arts and cultural organizations who’ve all dedicated themselves to reaffirming the rights and experiences of BIPOC in our nation and across the globe.

Course Overview
With more than just aesthetic appeal, cedar-strip boats are known for being lightweight, strong, and quick to build. Gain the know-how and confidence to complete a boat project in your own backyard through seven days of hands-on instruction building a tandem canoe with other students. Techniques involve setting up the strongback and templates, planking, fiberglassing and fitting out the canoe, and other boatbuilding skills. Just like the title says, a solid foundation of the “techniques and fundamentals” provides the skills to navigate your own cedar-strip boat building project at home. Separate tuition payment and cancellation policies apply to this course. At the close of the course, the student-built canoe will be for sale at a defined price to an interested student for the cost of materials. If multiple students are interested, a drawing will decide who will go home with the tandem canoe. An easy project to cartop back to your waterway to start your paddling adventure!

How Lake Superior Glass Art Got Its Start

As part of Go Downtown Grow Downtown, the Great Space Giveaway in 2012, three lucky winners would be working with property owners to secure free space in the Downtown. The contest drew in 56 concept papers and was narrowed down to 15 finalists. Due to the quality of the candidates, the selection committee opted to provide three grand prizes rather than the original two that were offered.
Finalists went through the process of creating business plans with the help of the Northeast Entrepreneur Fund and received an incentive package that included free rent for one year (of a three-year lease), free advertising package with the Duluth News Tribune, free marketing services from Out There Advertising, free retail mentoring services from Maurices, free membership with the Greater Downtown Council and startup loan assistance from the Northeast Entrepreneur Fund.
Dan was previously working from a home-based studio when he decided to expand and create Lake Superior Glass Art Gallery and Studio. It includes a storefront glass blowing demonstration, glass gallery, classes, supplies, and studio rental.
