Founded in 1962, The Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul (MSP Film) is Minnesota’s foremost film exhibition organization, and a 501(c)(3) non-profit. We bring the best of international and independent cinema to Minnesota audiences through the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, numerous niche film festivals and series, and daily programming 365-days a year.

We promote the art of film as a medium that fosters cross-cultural understanding, education, entertainment, and exploration. We offer audiences unique opportunities to experience the wealth of international cinema, to engage with and learn from visiting international filmmakers, and to come together and share these experiences as a community.

Our programming serves a growing membership base and diversifying audiences of 85,000+ annually.

MSP Film is best known for the annual centerpiece, the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF). Presented every April, MSPIFF is the largest international arts event in the region, exhibiting more than 250+ films from some 70 countries each year and drawing growing audiences of nearly 50,000 in 2016.

All films are presented in their original language with English subtitles for non-English dialogue.

Our Mission

The Mission of MSP Film is to foster a knowledgeable and vibrant appreciation of the art of film and its power to unite, inform and transform individuals and communities.

Our mission is accomplished through a commitment to exhibiting the very best of new and classic local, domestic and international independent cinema. These notable award-winning films represent many perspectives and experiences and are, for the most part, simply not otherwise available to audiences in the region. And so, through the power of great cinema, we expose our audiences, in a unique way, to a rare mix of cultures, ideas, current affairs and notable filmmaking from around the world.

Our mission is carried out through the annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, regular special themed series, and daily screenings of new releases and classics from around the globe.

A Natural Curiosity: The Story of the Bell Museum – Book Launch Event

A Natural Curiosity: The Story of the Bell Museum – Book Launch Event

Bell Museum

Cranes with text that reads: A Natural Curiosity The Story of the Bell MuseumSince its humble start in 1872 as a one-room cabinet of curiosities, the University of Minnesota’s Bell Museum of natural history has become one of the state’s most important cultural institutions. From its conception as part of a state-mandated geological and natural history survey, to its most recent ventures into technology, environmental science, and DNA sequencing, the Bell Museum has informed, explained, and expanded our relationship to the natural world. Drawing on a wealth of materials unearthed during the museum’s recent move, the gorgeously illustrated book, A Natural Curiosity, chronicles the remarkable discoveries and personalities that have made the Bell Museum what it is today.

Join us for a special evening book launch event featuring brief presentations by the book’s co-authors Barbara Coffin and Don Luce, followed by a moderated conversation with Coffin and Luce, hosted by the Bell Museum’s Science Director Dr. George Weiblen, also a contributing author to the book. They will be joined in conversation by lead writer and co-author Lansing Shepard and co-author Gwen Schagrin as well as contributing author Sally Brummel.

The book can be ordered online or purchased at the Bell Museum’s Curiosity Shop.

The event is open to the public via Zoom. Please register through Eventbrite. Attendees will receive a link two days prior to the event.

Reedy Gallery: “Reflections from Our Natural World” – Chaska, MN

On display now through May 2nd in the Reedy Gallery
Minnesota Landscape Arboretum: Artists Kathleen Krishnan, Mary Welke and Alison Price derive their visual cues from nature. Their work serves as a reminder: If we look closely, nature can inspire awe with her beauty, provide solace, conjure memories and educate us. The artists’ varying paths using color, form and textural qualities result in a whole that makes us more deeply explore our relationship with the natural world.

About

The Reedy Gallery, established through the generosity of Darwin and Geri Reedy, offers eclectic interpretations of nature’s beauty, outdoor landscapes and scenes by talented, award-winning artists with roots in Minnesota. Works in oil, pastel, watercolor, acrylic and other media add nature-inspired artistry to engage visitors in exploring the beauty and wonders of the outdoors at the Arboretum.

Typically, four to five fine art exhibits are presented each year, touching on seasonal themes and explorations. Informal tours are offered weekly by trained volunteer docents and staff. Often, artists talks and painting demonstrations are scheduled in the Great Hall or in the gardens to round out the exhibit. Reedy Gallery exhibits are open year-round during Visitor Center hours and are free with Arboretum admission.

Art in the Reedy Gallery is for sale, with a portion of the proceeds from each sale directly benefitting the Arboretum as well as helping to support the local arts community.  Purchases can be made through the Arboretum Gift Store.

World Premiere Drama – Parks: A Portrait Of A Young Artist – St. Paul, MN

History Theatre: Performances now through April 10th!

By Harrison David Rivers
in collaboration with Robin P. Hickman-Winfield
Directed by Talvin Wilks

The story of Gordon Parks, a black man’s journey to becoming a major figure in the American cultural landscape.

Gordon Parks, age 14, left home for St. Paul after the death of his mother. He lived with his sister, until her husband kicked him out of the house and into the streets. While struggling to survive, his mother’s words would echo in his head, “Make a good man of yourself, ‘cause you have a choice. You always have a choice.” Inspired by Parks’s book, A Choice of Weapons, Harrison takes us into the world of young Gordon, who would choose a camera to fight back hatred and discrimination. His passion as an artist would lead him to become a major figure in the American cultural landscape.

Featuring Kevin Brown, Jr. as Gordon Parks & James A. Williams as Pigeon Man

The Four Seasons

Join Ballet Co.Laboratory for the world premiere of Joseph Morrissey’s The Four Seasons. Beginning with the first blossoms of Spring, through the heat of Summer, into the twirls of Fall, and finally the swirling of Winter snow, The Four Seasons makes Vivaldi’s notes dance off of the page. Intricate footwork, unpredictable partnering, and elaborate movement patterns bring the feeling, color, and happenings of each season to life. Performed by the Company of Ballet Co.Laboratory to a live string quartet made up of the Twin Cities’ finest musicians, this work celebrates the splendor and cadence of each season.

In addition to The Four Seasons, a noteworthy pairing of Kinsun Chan’s Shifts and Genevieve Waterbury’s Danse Macabre will complete this production which celebrates a dancer’s most notable collaborator, musicians.

Performed by: The Company Dancers of Ballet Co.Laboratory and the Performance Ensemble of The School of Ballet Co.Laboratory

Shifts: choreographed by Kinsun Chan

Inspired by the shape, movement and sound of the cello, Kinsun Chan brings the music of Bach to life with 13 dancers and 1 cellist. Known for his intricate use of lighting and architecture, Kinsun explores different dimensions of this iconic music allowing the dancers and musician to move as one.

Danse Macabre: choreographed by Genevieve Waterbury

Danse Macabre is based on Saint-Saëns’ poem Dance Macabre which has become a metaphor for how chaos and order depend on each other. In this piece, dancers navigate the push and pull of daily responsibilities, discover others on similar paths, and embrace the power of unison.
