William A. Irvin Haunted Ship Tours – Duluth, MN

If you think you’re brave enough to face your fears, come to the Haunted Ship. But remember only the tough ones make it through, alive.

The William A. Irvin has been transforming into the Haunted Ship each October for nearly 30 years. Brave visitors can experience a real scare by taking a self-guided tour through the once historic ore ship that has been flipped inside out to reveal its true identity. The haunting of the Irvin is not just a rumor, as mysterious and paranormal sightings have been recorded throughout history.
This year, the Haunted Ship crew was inspired to create several new areas, while refreshing props in every room for a new fever dream of a tour. This year’s waking nightmare includes a sinking German U-boat with water flooding in, a narrow escape through catacombs and an abandoned castle with tension at every turn, a vortex delivery to a Victorian parlor and library, and even more thrilling elements.
Starting in the engine room you will travel through the ship until you land in your final destination that is below the freezing waters of Lake Superior in the maze of terror. If you thought the rest of the ship was terrifying, just wait until you step down into the maze. While down in the pitch dark “dungeon” of the ship, not knowing where you’re going is the least of your worries. Watch your back; you never know who’ll be hovering over your shoulder.

St. Paul Booya Schedule: It’s booya time! – St. Paul, MN

Booya is a hearty stew cooked up in large cauldrons for fundraisers

The air is getting crisp, leaves are starting to turn, and that can only mean one thing: It’s booya time!

After the MN State Fair ends two seasons start, “Back to School,” and Booya.  The latter started the weekend after Labor Day and usually runs to just before the General Election in November.

Booya might mean something to another part of the country but in the Upper Midwest it means a thick stew that is mixed and cooked up in a giant vat, or 55 gallon drum and served at non-profits and churches by the bowl until it’s gone.

Barten Pumpkins

When fall rolls around and our minds start turning toward school, sweaters, and maybe even the coming holidays, many folks start thinking about doing all they can to enjoy the fall shoulder season. Fall foliage drives, visits to apple orchards and corn mazes, and autumn road trips to state parks may all find their ways into our plans. But for many of us – particularly those with a love for jack-o-lanterns and other gourd-oriented decor and, of course, kids – fall doesn’t really start until we’ve visited one of the many fantastic pumpkin patches in Minnesota. And I figure, if you’re going to go, go big and visit Barten Pumpkins. It’s not an agritainment amusement park, but there’s plenty to see and do, and it’s one of the largest pumpkin patches in the Land of 10,000 Lakes – so if you don’t find your pumpkin here, you may not find it anywhere!

When you’re looking for this year’s pumpkins, you can’t do much better than Barten Pumpkins. Visit Barten Pumpkins on the web to learn more about the farm and stopping out to pick up this year’s pumpkins. For photos and updates, check out the farm’s Facebook page. While you’re in the area be sure to do yourself a favor and explore the charming town of New Prague. With a rich Czech heritage, it’s one of the most “European” feeling communities in the State. And don’t pass up a treat from Lau’s Czech bakery!

The Audacity to be Asian in Rural America: we owe you no apologies by Nancy XiáoRong Valentine

Artist Statement

The Audacity to be Asian in Rural America: we owe you no apologies is a series of 12 watercolor and Chinese ink scroll paintings on rice paper that visually tells the story of the Hao family’s Chinese American immigrant experience in rural west central Minnesota.

This series of works was created as a deeply personal reflective exploration and development of understanding of my family’s immigrant experiences through my artistry. As well as a form of representation, or a showcased reminder, to rural community members that people of Asian descent do, indeed, live, work, play, dwell, occupy and visit rural regions – and are deserving of the same human dignity and honor in their authentic existance as their non-Asian neighbors.

I’m well aware, and will honestly admit, that this series could never speak on behalf of all, or even most of, Asian American Pacific Island community members in rural spaces. But what I’m also well aware of is how few stories I’ve encountered that even make mention of Asian Americans living in rural spaces. “Asian” and “Rural” are two identities that intersect and foster a unique experience, but that experience is not new.

Through the use of water sourced from Long Lake (Otter Tail County, MN), traditional Chinese artist supplies and featuring the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, I invite you to take a glimpse into the lives of the Hao family: my mother (ox), grandmother (dog), grandfather (pig) and myself (monkey). Each scroll painting tells a different story about my family through my contemporary impressionistic illustrations of each zodiac animal’s traditionally reputed attributes, symbolism, expressive brush strokes and color choice.

Through sharing these paintings and lived-experiences, I hope that rural community members, especially white folks, will realize and begin to further acknowledge that Asian people do, and will continue to, exist in rural spaces. I also hope that Asian people will feel encouraged and empowered to have the “audacity” to continue existing in rural spaces more fully, authentically and unapologetically.

Thank you for making the time to see this exhibit, engage with my artwork, listen to my family’s story and honor their lives with the dignity they have always been deserving of.

About

Nancy XiáoRong Valentine is a Chinese American artist living and making a life in rural Otter Tail County, Minnesota. Conceived as the second child of a family residing in Lanzhou, Gansu during the era of China’s ‘One Child Policy,’ Valentine views her artistry as a channel to deepen her cultural connections to and between her Chinese heritage and Midwestern roots. Valentine’s artwork is woven with nuance and symbolism resulting in conceptually complex visual stories meant to evoke empathy.

Showcasing the spectacle of bird migration!

If you like following the Fall Color Finder map, you’re going to love the BirdCast migration map powered by the Cornell Lab, Colorado State University and U Mass Amherst. BirdCast forecasts nightly migration numbers and it’s an amazing way to find out how many (and even which species) birds are soaring by on their way to warmer horizons.

In the past few weeks, migration soared as roughly 87,000,000 birds took flight across Minnesota on their journey south. The birds averaged 27 mph, an altitude of 2,000ft, and a SSE heading.
