Time & Location

May 21, 12:00 PM CDT – May 23, 8:00 PM CDT
Phelps Field Park , 701 E 39th St, Minneapolis, MN 55407, USA

About the Event

Memorialize The Movement in collaboration with Save The Boards & Minnesota African American Heritage Museum & Gallery  will be hosting a free outdoor exhibition in Phelps Field Park near the George

Floyd Memorial Square. This will be an opportunity for our community to remember and reflect on the stories being told through these murals. The mourning of our loss, the acknowledgment of our successes and failures, and our hopes for the future and a more equitable Minneapolis. We hope that through this immersive experience community members will have a chance to heal, reflect, and learn.

While we do want to celebrate Mr. Floyd’s life and the ways in which our community has stepped up in the wake of his death, this will be a somber event. We want to allow our community a chance to heal and reflect on the last year. Following this exhibition are several events hosted by MTM, and other local organizers that will focus solely on bringing joy to our people and healing through happiness.

In an effort to uplift our local Black creatives, we will be featuring 18 artists to paint murals on blank plywood boards. We will also have 10 vendors, organizations, and small businesses present at the event, along with 12 performers, speakers, and musicians.

In awareness of the trauma that our community has experienced over the last year, we are also inviting mental health clinics and resources that center Black and Brown health professionals to this exhibition and free legal resources for those who may need them.

About Us

Mississippi Park Connection strengthens the enduring connection between people and the Mississippi River by enriching the life of the river and the lives of all who experience our national park, the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area.

Vision Statement

In partnership with the National Park Service, Mississippi Park Connection will ignite discovery and a lifelong relationship with the Mississippi River. Through youth education, environmental stewardship and community engagement, we will mobilize residents and visitors, and serve as a model for operating a national park in an urban area where people are part of the landscape.

Core Values

Community Focused
We are fortunate to have the support of an engaged community, full of knowledgeable and passionate individuals. Each person has a unique relationship with this place, and plays a role in telling the river’s story. We are committed to honoring these relationships, and ensuring that everyone feels a sense of ownership of this park.

Inspiration
We seek to inspire people of all backgrounds to discover, explore, and cherish this place. We believe that by helping others to develop their personal relationships with the river, we will continue to cultivate dedicated advocates, stewards, and visitors of this park.

Resilience
We believe that our organization is much like a river, ever-flowing and always changing; and that enduring change means embracing it and remaining flexible. We keep an optimistic eye on the future to create solutions that steer through whatever snags may lie ahead.

Partnership
Above all, we believe in working together to achieve our goals. Just as no stream, creek, or river exists in isolation, we too are all connected to this watershed and to one another. It is through our partnerships that we are able to set a high standard in the national park system, and be a catalyst for positive change.

Joy
We acknowledge the human value of our shared natural resources, and recognize the role these spaces play in keeping us connected to our humanity. We go to the river to find tranquility, healing, and fun. The emotional connections that we have with the river are the driving force behind everything we do.

History

Mississippi Park Connection began as the local fund of the National Park Foundation, under the name Mississippi River Fund. Since our inception in 2003, we have contributed more than $4.5 million to the National Park Service and its many partners in the community, improving the health of the Mississippi River and our community. In October 2015, we changed our name to Mississippi Park Connection, which better reflects our mission and programs. Mississippi Park Connection continues to play a pivotal role in ensuring the park is preserved, protected and enhanced for the enjoyment and education of all.

OUR NAMESAKE
CHARLES W. “SPEED” HOLMAN

1898 – 1931

About: Holman was born in Minneapolis and grew up a daredevil. Early pranks and motorcycle racing earned him the nickname “Speed.” He learned to fly at the Security Aircraft Company at Speedway Field in 1920, did some parachute jumps and received his first airplane as a gift from his father. Stunting and cross-country racing became his passion. His name became a household word, and when the newly organized Northwest Airways looked for its first pilot, they hired Speed. He became Operations Manager and pioneered air mail routes across Wisconsin and into North Dakota.

His airline career was punctuated by wins in national air races, including the prestigious Thompson Trophy Race in 1930, part of the National Air Races in Chicago. Holman set a looping record that stood for many years*; visited every corner of the State, lobbying the cities to build airports; was considered one of the country’s top aerobatic pilots; and every fragment of his life was spectacular. Such was his death during an impromptu aerobatic performance at the dedication of the Omaha Airport. His funeral was the largest in state history, with a hundred thousand persons turning out along the funeral route and at the cemetery.

*His 1,433 consecutive loops over the St. Paul Airport is one of many stories to inspire Holman’s Table.
