The Beggining…

Rockin’ around the clock since 1961! Restaurant is open March through the end of September. October through December are pumpkins and fall sales and spruce tops, winter greens and Christmas trees.
With the American dream of running their own business, in 1961, Gordon and Jeanette Bennyhoff and 8 children opened the Minnetonka Drive In. It takes an entire family to run a family business and we still operate that way today. Current owner is son Dave Bennyhoff who started at age 9, washing the glass gallon jugs for root beer.

Our secret? It’s not one, admittedly. The best ingredients is a big part.  Turns out we also like people, though.  We want you to feel the family atmosphere when you stop in to eat or have a homemade root beer float on a hot day.

American Swedish Institute: “Kindertransport – Rescuing Children on the Brink of War”

Just openend is “Kindertransport – Rescuing Children on the Brink of War,” open through October 31. Experience the exhibition in person at the museum and/or online with a Virtual Exhibition Tour. These live monthly tours will give a unique perspective on the exhibition’s content and feature different speakers. On the Tuesday, July 27 tour, we welcome special guest Michael Simonson, Archivist and Director of Public Outreach at the Leo Baeck Institute at the Center for Jewish History. Michael and Ingrid Nyholm-Lange (Director of Experience at ASI) will discuss how @yeshiva_university and the @leobaeckinstitute collaborated to develop this exhibition. Tours run from 5-6 pm Central Time and cost $20 per virtual connection. Register on ASI’s website.

The exhibition, Kindertransport – Rescuing Children on the Brink of War, illuminates the story of the Kindertransport (German for “Children’s Transport”), the astonishing rescue effort that brought approximately 10,000 Jewish children from Nazi Germany to Great Britain and other countries, including Sweden between 1938 and 1940.

This exhibition explores the difficult and often heartbreaking journeys through original artifacts and personal stories.

It brings the Kindertransport to life by presenting objects that the children brought with them on their passage to England; letters between parents and children; new audio testimonies by survivors; and a series of dramatic stories that link the materials in gallery to the broader context of the era.

The Minnesota debut of this exhibition with be accompanied by The Story is Here, featuring the stories of local families in the Midwest who were personally impacted by the Kindertransport.

Lakewood Cemetery 150th Anniversary Celebration – Minneapolis, MN

Star Tribune: As part of its 150th anniversary celebration this year, Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis welcomed earth artist Day Schildkret for its Midsummer Memory Mandalas event to honor the impermanence of life and transform grief into beauty.

Lakewood Cemetery

Since 1871, Lakewood’s 250 acres of urban memorial parkland have served as a community gathering place and a chronicle of our history. Today, Lakewood is making memorialization more relevant, accessible and inviting for new audiences and generations.

Take a walk around the tree covered, grassy area that stretches from the Living Memory Tree to the Garden Mausoleum (near the Walker family Monument) and check out the earth art gallery on the grounds!
These vibrant mandalas were created by workshop participants who learned the Morning Altars 7 step process from visiting artist and instructor Day Schildkret (Morning Altars). The impermanent pieces may not be here for long, so be sure to visit soon!
