Minnesota College of Science and Engineering Presents: Winter Light Shows

Minnesota College of Science and Engineering Presents: Winter Light Shows

Join us for a CSE  Premiere Party
 Friday, Dec. 10th, 2021, 5-6:30 p.m.

Join the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering (CSE) and Tesla Works for three dazzling light shows designed by science and engineering students. The high-tech light show features more than 250,000 LED lights set to music written and recorded by University of Minnesota students. And special thanks to Banner Engineering for sponsoring the show!

Now in its 10th year, the show has become a campus winter tradition. Lights will surround the semi-circular Civil Engineering Courtyard and will be synchronized to music for a 360-degree sensory outdoor experience. Features include a giant 22-foot lighted tree, two 8-foot 3D snowman signs, 8-foot lighted arches, a 5-foot-by-12-foot lighted pixelated changeable sign, a 6-foot circular light structure, 10 two-foot lighted snowflakes, and several lighted trees. The students estimate that the show includes more than five miles of lights and extension cords. The light show is presented by the University of Minnesota Tesla Works student group. The show features the technical and creative skills of University of Minnesota science and engineering students and their ability to have fun on campus—even in the winter. Minnesota Orchestra: Merry (and Bright) Music Making with Charles Lazarus

Minnesota Orchestra: Merry (and Bright) Music Making with Charles Lazarus

 Sunday December 12th, 2pm

Give your holiday season a big, brassy boost as Minnesota Orchestra trumpeter Charles Lazarus and some very special guests swing their way through your favorite holiday tunes. Lazarus’ all-star band features Grammy-winners, former Prince collaborators and many world-renowned performers, all lending a bright, fresh take on the most beloved classics.

Trumpeter Charles Lazarus’ annual Merry & Bright concert has become a brass-studded staple of the Orchestra Hall holiday calendar over the last several years, enticing audiences with its cool twist on holiday tunes and heartwarming classics.

For the 2021 holiday season, Lazarus and his all-star band return to the stage with a new collection of holiday hits from his latest album, Merrier & Brighter. Described as soulful and swinging, funky and classic, the album features his signature take on Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and some new holiday originals, among others.

Part of the fun of a Lazarus holiday show is the sheer variety of guests who join him onstage: powerhouse vocalists Tonia Hughes Kendrick and Bruce Henry, a nine-piece brass band showcasing many Minnesota Orchestra brass players, and composer-pianist (and New Power Generation alum) Tommy Barbarella are among this season’s collaborators.

New to the festive line-up this year will be the Merry & Bright Kids Choir, a small ensemble of young singers who will help share the Orchestra Hall premiere of the infectious, I Believe. Take a listen below.

The Western Front, Christmas, 1914. Out of the violence comes a silence, then a song. A German soldier steps into No Man’s Land singing “Stille Nacht.” Thus begins an extraordinary night of camaraderie, music, peace. A remarkable true story, told in the words and songs of the men who lived it. The production features the talents of the Minneapolis-based cast who starred in the national broadcast and the highly-lauded Off-Broadway run, which earned the 2018 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience and will celebrate a return engagement following a National Broadcast on PBS in 2020.

Theater Latté Da is grateful for the generosity of our Production Sponsor,
The Thomas and Julianne Youngren Foundation.

DENISE PROSEK,
CO-FOUNDER

Theater Latté Da is the only nonprofit professional theater in the Twin Cities that exclusively produces musical theater. Since its inception, TLD has presented 78 Mainstage productions, including 12 world premieres, and 13 area premieres. Each has garnered critical acclaim and earned its artists and TLD a host of awards, including: seven IVEY Awards for overall excellence, National Endowment for the Arts, the Gabriel Award for Broadcast Excellence, and the American Theater Wing National Theater Company Award. In addition to our Twin Cities presence, TLD’s original production All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 celebrated its 12th anniversary with a national tour and an Off-Broadway debut at the Sheen Center in New York City this past November and December, which won the 2019 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience. TLD’s provocative staging of Ragtime was remounted at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, Washington in October 2017, and Asolo Repertory Theater in Florida in May 2018. TLD’s production of Sweeney Todd was remounted at Asolo Repertory in Spring 2019.

Since 1998, TLD has performed in venues throughout the Twin Cities, ranging from the intimate 120-seat Loring Playhouse to the Pantages Theater in downtown Minneapolis. To deepen our relationship with Twin Cities audiences and to better reach the communities we serve, Latté Da decided to make a permanent home in northeast Minneapolis. In 2016, TLD became the proud owner of the historic Ritz Theater, a 234-seat theater with administrative offices, rehearsal space, dressing rooms, and box office.

Our Mission

Theater Latté Da creates new and impactful connections between story, music, artist, and audience—exploring and expanding the art of musical theater.

Our Values

We believe in work that is bold, inclusive and collaborative; we act with integrity and gratitude.

Bold

We make bold choices in support of our mission and vision, both on and off stage. By illuminating the unseen, giving voice to the unheard, and empathizing with the unknown, we open eyes, ears and hearts.

Inclusion

We believe in creating an  environment where a diverse  group of voices are welcomed to  fully participate. We are inspired  and strengthened through  equitable partnerships. We  actively work to make musical  theater accessible to everyone.

Collaborative

We believe musical theater to be  the most collaborative of art  forms: incorporating music,  drama, poetry, dance and  design. We know that the whole is  greater than the sum of its parts and therefore embody a collaborative spirit in all we do.

Integrity

We hold ourselves to the highest  standards of artistic and fiscal  integrity. We are committed to honesty, equity and transparency  in all aspects of our administration and art, implementing policies and practices to support those ideals.

Gratitude

We are grateful for our artists, audiences, donors, board and staff. We recognize that each individual plays an important role in this organization’s success, and we actively seek out opportunities to acknowledge each person’s contribution.

About

Welcome to the world of Tim Niver hospitality. The master of front-of-house service always dreamed of making a red sauce joint like Mucci’s; recipes — like a tightly layered lasagna and decadent tiramisu — are inspired by his mother’s Italian kitchen and executed by a remarkable kitchen team.
