Glide Onto These Great Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks – Minnesota

Glide Onto These Great Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks – Minnesota

Whether you want to practice your Flying V or polish your toe pick, Minnesota’s outdoor ice skating rinks are the perfect surface for winter fun.

Found in every corner of the state, ice rinks form on frozen lakes, ponds and even rivers as soon as the ice is thick enough, with refrigerated rinks popping up around Thanksgiving or even earlier. In addition to skating, most of the rinks on this list have skates available for rent, as well as warming houses and/or other perks like concessions and special events. So channel your inner Neal Broten or Kristy Yamaguchi and head out to these ice rinks across the state.

Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Area

When it comes to ice skating, few places do it better than the Twin Cities. Both St. Paul and Minneapolis host free ice rinks beneath their shimmering downtown skylines (Wells Fargo WinterSkate and WinterSkate in Loring Park, respectively, are both on hiatus this year), and countless neighboring cities have their own impressive rinks.

You can skate North America’s largest outdoor refrigerated rink in Roseville, or head to Maple Grove to carve your way across one of the country’s only refrigerated ice skating trails. If frozen lakes are more your style, head to EdinaBuffalo, or one of three lakes in Minneapolis (Lake of the Isles, Nokomis and Powderhorn).

In Fergus Falls, Lake Alice is plowed for both a skating rink and a track around the lake, and remains open for as long as conditions allow. In St. Cloud, Lake George is the place to skate, or head to Blackberry Ridge Golf Club in nearby Sartell, where you can warm up before or after your skate at the club’s Grill 19. Other places to skate in this region include AlexandriaPine RiverHutchinsonNew York Mills and the Brainerd Lakes area, which features rinks on Gull Lake for guests staying at Cragun’s Resort or Grand View Lodge.

Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks in Southern Minnesota

The towering bluffs of southeast Minnesota make a beautiful backdrop for skating in Winona, a year-round destination for outdoor recreation. But lakes aren’t the only bodies of water that freeze in the winter. The Straight River, a 55-mile tributary of the Mississippi, has hockey and skating near downtown Owatonna, or you can skate on an inlet of the Des Moines River in southwest Jackson.

Several outdoor skating rinks can be found in Albert LeaMankato and Rochester, where you can skate on a frozen running track.

Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks in Northeast Minnesota

You can’t skate on Lake Superior, but you can get pretty close at Bayfront Festival Park in Duluth. After the Bentleyville Festival of Lights wraps up, the park transforms into an ice skating rink in early January. Further up the North Shore, outdoor rinks can be found in Knife River, Two HarborsSilver BayTofte and Grand Marais.

Further south in the hockey-loving Iron Range, there are rinks in Biwabik (minutes from the Giants Ridge ski resort), Hibbing and Virginia. While on the Range, pay a visit to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth. Or head to Grand Rapids for your choice of four outdoor rinks, including a covered one at the IRA Civic Center.

Bemidji is no stranger to fun on the ice. In addition to the city’s four indoor ice arenas, there are two outdoor skating destinations. Warroad, whose nickname is “Hockeytown USA,” has a free outdoor rink behind its two indoor ice arenas. Duck inside both buildings for a look at the town’s impressive hockey history. Further south, Detroit Lakes’ Peoples Park is another skating destination in this region.

Explore and Experience Minnesota’s Frozen Waterfalls

Explore and Experience Minnesota’s Frozen Waterfalls

Image: @venture_steve

Sure, we’re the land of (over) 10,000 lakes. This winter, try something new: skip the usual trip across frozen lakes and instead pack a lunch for one spectacular excursion to Minnesota’s frozen waterfalls. Spend the afternoon exploring these breathtaking icy falls and hike the surrounding paths and trails for one incredibly picturesque afternoon. Just be sure to have plenty of storage on your phone — you’re going to be taking a lot of pictures.

Wolf Creek Falls

Philip Schwarz Photography

Banning State Park in Sandstone is home to this beautiful hidden gem. Tucked away a half mile into the park you’ll pass along scenic rocky paths and woods until you come upon the 12-foot falls seemingly in the middle of nowhere. This frozen falls is where the Wolf Creek meets Kettle River so be sure to also explore along the river and stream for even more stunning secluded landscapes.

Minneopa Falls

Not too far from the metro, Minneopa Falls is well worth the drive to Minneopa State Park in Mankato. To reach the falls you’ll walk down a limestone stairway to a trail below in the valley that encircles the waterfall ensuring spectacular views of the frozen vista. The falls plummets 40 feet over a rocky edge into a gorge that will eventually flow into the Minnesota River. And if you can tear yourself away from the beautiful falls, you will also want to check out Bison Drive Road where you might be able to catch sight of bison roaming across 331 acres of the park.

Gooseberry Falls

The North Shore always guarantees a beautiful scenic backdrop. And Gooseberry Falls, of course, does not disappoint. You’ll be able to explore the icy and frozen waters of the Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls frozen in time as the water fell into the chasm below. Either hike, snowshoe, or cross-country ski the trails around the falls and be sure to stop at the overlook bridge for absolutely stunning views of the icy waterfalls.

Cascade Falls

More North Shore fun with the Cascades. You’ll find five small waterfalls make up the Cascades with an additional waterfall, Cascade Falls, situated further into the park. You can either hike, snowshoe, or cross-country ski the trails which will pass by overlooks and footbridges providing great views of the frozen falls. Spend the afternoon skiing the beginner loops, hiking the trails to the falls, and then wrap up your day relaxing and getting toasty warm in their warming house.

Minnehaha Falls

Here’s a throwback to exploring a notorious local waterfall last season with my good buddy John. These majestic falls freeze up every winter here in Minneapolis and form an amazing cave of ice. I’m looking forward to another winter of icy exploration!

If you don’t want to venture outside the Twin Cities, Minnehaha Falls is your spot. Each year the falls freezes into a beautiful cascade of icy blues and turquoise making it a popular winter destination. Simply walk the trails around the falls and along the easily accessible overlooks for breathtaking views of the falls. However, even as alluring as it is, remember to not wander behind the falls for safety concerns with falling ice.

Devil’s Kettle Falls

One of Minnesota’s more intriguing natural phenomenon, Devil’s Kettle Falls boasts a 50 foot falls on one side and on the other, a drop where the water plunges into a cavernous hole and completely vanishes. While they have figured out the water goes underground and comes out later to meet the river, it’s still an incredibly cool place to visit especially in the frozen wintertime.

High Falls at Grand Portage State Park

If you’re looking for awe-inspiring views, look no further. At 120 feet, High Falls is the tallest waterfall in Minnesota and also located in the only park in the nation that shares land with a Native American Band—the Band of Ojibwe. In the winter, this immense falls is a particularly stunning sight. It’s an easy one mile round-trip hike to the falls or you can opt to snowshoe to the falls on non-plowed trails. And if you’re looking for a more challenging wilderness experience you can hike the rugged 5 mile round-trip trail to Middle Falls for more frozen and icy cascades.

START YOUR SELF-GUIDED 360º GLENSHEEN EXPERIENCE

Here are the best ways to experience the 360º Virtual Tour:

  1. Choose your Virtual Tour Enhancement – Virtual Treasure Book or Glensheen App
    1. Download & open the Glensheen app on your smartphone (available in the Apple App Store and Google Play)
    2. Or print the Virtual Treasure Book
  2. Open the 360º virtual tour on a laptop or desktop
  3. Use the Virtual Treasure Book as an eye-spy game or the Glensheen app for audio snippets to enhance your experience as you virtually explore the mansion

VIRTUAL TREASURE BOOK

This new enhancement was designed after the success of the original in-person Treasure Book that was created in 2015 for guests on tour while exploring the mansion. This is an eye-spy game intended to be used within the Glensheen Virtual Tour. The Virtual Treasure Book makes a virtual tour experience way more fun than most other Virtual Tours… which can get boring pretty quickly. During the COVID-19 closure, the new Treasure Book is available as a free download to enhance the 360º virtual tour experience.

How do you use the Virtual Tour Treasure Book?

  1. Download the Virtual Tour Treasure Book –HERE
  2. Print it off (Be sure to select ‘fit to page’ in your print settings)
  3. Go to Glensheen’s Virtual Tour
  4. Use the Treasure Book as you guide yourself through the mansion

GLENSHEEN APP

Glensheen Mansion launched the tour app through the museum app company, Encurate, in 2019 to enhance the self-guided tour experience. With maps and audio descriptions for nearly every room, the app is a complementary tool to not only the General Admission in-person experience but now also, the Glensheen 360º virtual tour. Feeling a little stir crazy? The app and Glensheen 360º also allows you to explore the grounds and 12-acre estate.

Glensheen at Home Hack: We suggest viewing the 360º virtual tour on a desktop or laptop while using the Glensheen app on a smartphone. With a little bit of manual work, you can connect what you’re seeing on your computer with the descriptions you’re hearing from the app on your phone.

The Glensheen app is a free and available for download by searching “GLENSHEEN” in the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Our mission is simple. It is to Celebrate Preservation.

An Authentic Experience in a world full of manufactured experiences, we have very few opportunities to fully immerse ourselves in authenticity. Glensheen offers one of those rare chances. Come see why Glensheen Mansion, perched on the shore of Lake Superior, is the most visited historic home in Minnesota. Our 12-acre estate features gardens, bridges, and the famous 39-room mansion built with remarkable 20th-century craftsmanship, telling the story of the Duluth region.

ICYMI: A Peek at Minnesota’s Top Holiday Lighted Drive-Thru Shows Not to Miss!

ICYMI: A Peek at Minnesota’s Top Holiday Lighted Drive-Thru Shows Not to Miss!

Destination_duluth: Opening Night at Bentleyville By @duluth_harborcam

 …

Here in Minnesota, there are many ways to celebrate the holiday season. Santa visits, Christmas carols, and twinkling lights make the season magical. In 2020, many favorite events are canceled in light of COVID-19 restrictions. But other fun attractions have sprouted up all across the state that allow safe social distancing. Among the most popular events are drive-thru lights shows. You can find them at Duluth’s Bentleyville USA; Glow at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds; Christmas In Color at ValleyFair; Sovereign Estate Wine drive thru in Waconia; Winter Lights at the Minnesota Arboretum. And to add another light show to your list: Severs Holiday Lights in Shakpoee, Minnesota, home to a 1/2-mile drive-thru light show that you will love.! Here’s what you need to know:

 Bentleyville USA

Bentleyville Tour of Lights opened at the Bayfront Festival Park! This year is a drive thru experience and the cost is $10 per car. Although it’s different this year we are thankful for the hard work that was put into it to bring some joy this season. Visit thru Sunday December 27th: Open 5-9pm Monday thru Thursday and 5-10pm Friday thru Sunday.

Sever’s Holiday Lights: Minnesota’s Enchanting 1/2-Mile Holiday Drive-Thru Is Sure To Delight

This dazzling light show is a 1/2-mile path through enchanting lights synchronized to music. Simply turn on the radio and enjoy the colorful dance of 1.2 million lights!

When we originally bought our tickets, this was not a drive-thru event. In fact, visiting this vineyard for their light display is one of our very favorite early winter activities. We bundle up, walk the grounds, ooh and ahh over the lights, play in the snow, and end with a hot chocolate on their heated patio.

We knew this year would be different, but still hoped to get out on foot in a winter wonderland of lights. But the governor’s orders came through this week, and @sovereignestatewine quickly pivoted to a drive-thru so as not to cancel the event. Was it as charming as previous years? No. Did the kids still love it? Yes. Lots of squeals came from the car seats. Was it worth the money? Depends. Our family cost about $25. The experience only took about 15-minutes. We did receive a $5 voucher toward wine, which we gladly used to try a new bottle of wine. We are writing this one off as supporting a business we really enjoy visiting. We also have spent almost nothing on activities this year because of so had room in our budget. But I realize that’s not true for everyone.

All of this to say please consider visiting in a future year if you don’t head out this year!

And if you’re looking for another great light show, check out Nature Illuminated at the Minnesota Zoo. It’s not holiday-themed, but it’s absolutely delightful!
