St. Patrick’s Parade
109 W 4th St
St Paul, MN 55102
St. Patrick’s Parade: Join us as we paint the city of St. Paul green again! Shenanigans begin at noon starting at Rice Park, traveling down 5th St, and ending at Mears Park.
This year’s parade will be a reversal of our traditional route in years past. The fun begins at Rice Park (5th St & Market St) and will travel along 5th Street, ending near Mears Park (5th St & Sibley St).
We reversed the route this year so we can all head straight on to CHS Field to celebrate the return of St. Paul’s beloved St. Patrick’s Day Parade with a big party! The Ballpark Hooley presented by Guinness will start immediately after the parade (12:30 pm) and will feature live music by The Northerly Gales and Tim Sigler, Irish dancers, and some great food and drinks. Tickets for the Ballpark Hooley are $5 in advance or $10 at the door. (Parade is free)

Special Planetarium Show — Audio Universe: Tour of the Solar system
Experience the Solar System like never before—by traveling on a spacecraft that can turn the objects in space into sound!
The audience of this stunning 35-minute show will be transported into a special spacecraft that takes them to the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) to view the stars in the night sky, before lifting them off into space to visit the Earth, Moon, Sun, and all the planets of the Solar System.
Unlike traditional planetarium shows, the soundtrack takes the lead role. Each of the objects in space are represented with sounds as well as being presented with the incredible 4K resolution visuals. The audience listens to the stars appear and hear the planets orbit around their heads. This means that this show is an immersive experience that can be enjoyed irrespective of level of vision.

About
The Gull Lake Frozen Fore Winter Weekend takes place in the Brainerd Lakes Area each February. This three-day celebration of all things winter, brings together a weekend of activities and fun for adults. From snow golfing to dancing on a frozen lake, this winter weekend is unlike any other.
Friday night begins with the annual Frozen Flop, our version of the polar plunge, which raises money for local charities. Not only does the Frozen Flop occur in the middle of Hole-in-the-Day bay, but also under a heated tent. Unlike any other flop, spectators stay warm, and floppers keep out of the wind making it a truly unique event. Following the flop, is our heated Tent Party! Showcasing an ice bar, food and live music, the Tent Party is a super way to kick off the evening.
Saturday morning begins with a Pancake Feed on the ice to get you ready for the day. Following the feed, Snow Golf begins. Here you can jump on provided shuttles, or drive your snowmobiles, and play nine holes of winter golf at nine different locations around the Gull Lake. We provide the golf club and a fresh supply of tennis balls so all you have to do is venture around the lake and try getting a point at each location. The diversity of each “golf” hole variety keeps the day entertaining. A Digital Scavenger Hunt also takes place throughout the day so keep that phone charged up. If you get a picture at each given location you will be entered to win 4 free tickets to the following Frozen Fore Winter Weekend. In the evening, the Saturday night Tent Party kicks off again with hours of great music under the heated tent. Stayed tuned for more Saturday activities, we are always adding more.
Finishing the Frozen Fore weekend is Sunday’s Food Fest. This cook-off features a variety of local restaurants showcasing their flavors in a taste competition for the best flavors in the area. Enter the heated tent at Hole-in-the-day Bay and take in the aromas of the Brainerd Lakes Area’s finest restaurants. Vote for your favorite after you’ve sampled them all and get ready for to hear the judges announce the winner.
Proceeds of the Frozen Fore Winter Weekend event are donated to Confidence Learning Center and Kids Against Hunger – Brainerd Lakes Area. Come support the kids! If you’re interested in participating in this fun and charitable event you can buy tickets online or at any of the sponsoring locations.

Polar Fest is held annually in mid-February with the plunge and fireworks on the Saturday night of President’s Day weekend!
…
About
Polar Fest was started in 1996 by Erika Gilsdorf, former owner of Lakeside Tavern. She loves winter and wanted to see some sort of celebration of winter by the lake and outside her restaurant. Coincidentally, at the same time, Ron Zeman, former board member for Develop DL, heard about people jumping into a hole in the lake to raise money for an organization. He took that idea to the Boys & Girls Club and the “Polar Fest Plunge” was born.
Polar Fest continued until 2002 when lack of support left Polar Fest with only its key event — the Polar Plunge, but no other activities. In 2005, a group of crazy, winter-loving citizens came together to reinvigorate and warm up Polar Fest!
Since then, Polar Fest has continued, with the pinnacle event being the Polar Fest Plunge into Little Detroit Lake, plus myriad other activities ranging from golfing on the lake to presentations by polar explorers to dances in the sand. In 2008, fireworks on the last Saturday evening were added and that has become one of the highlights of the week-long winter celebration. Now, in 2021, two epic fireworks displays will take place, one to kick off the festival, and the other to mark its end.

HISTORY
In 1984 the Ely Ski Club (now known as the Ely Nordic Ski Club) started a cross-country ski race running from Tower to Ely called the Wilderness Trek. Local businesses and craftspeople set up booths at the finish line. Food and live music added to the festivities.
Starting in 1988 Bill and Gloria Miller volunteered numerous hours to create and direct more activities at the finish line of the Wilderness Trek. Their focus was on expanding to a three-day weekend promoting outdoor activities and education about the history of the Ely, Minnesota area.
In 1995, the Millers and their army of volunteers called on Bob Maidl to organize a Snow Sculpting Symposium in concert with an expanded 10-day festival surrounding the Wilderness Trek and featuring the Voyageur historical aspect of the area. Steger Mukluks hosted the first Mukluk Ball. The first commemorative pin was designed especially for the festival.
Then, in 1998, as part of the Voyageur Winter Festival, the Ely ArtWalk was created to promote local artists and their work by providing exhibition space in the windows of Ely’s downtown merchants. That year, 16 artists participated, displaying 30 pieces of art in a handful of stores. In 2004 the Ely ArtWalk became its own entity and by 2006 included over 170 artists, 600 pieces of art and 55 stores participating in the event.
Over the years, activities such as a crafts fair, musical concerts, Sled Dog Rides, and several food events have become part of the festivities.
In 2007, the name of the festival changed from Voyageur Winter Festival to Ely Winter Festival. The historical aspect is still represented during the two surrounding weekends of the festival and there are always a lot of additional events for the artistically inclined, the musically inclined, those who love the outdoors and those who love to eat! There’s always something for the whole family!

Some who live in Southern Minnesota speculate that because it is uncomfortably cold in the Twin Cities it must be even more so in Ely. Not so! Because we do not have the wide open spaces of the plains of southern Minnesota, and because the air here is very dry in winter, we do not have the driving winds and biting humidity as in the south. Because the cold does not penetrate, if properly dressed you can comfortably stay outside for extended periods of time, even in low temperatures.
