North Star Donuts: Last Days Left at the U of M Apple House!

North Star Donuts: Last Days Left at the U of M Apple House!

Before our move back to Minnesota (where one of us was born and raised), we previously owned and managed a 30-acre pick-your-own farm (including an apple orchard with 6500+ trees) for four years in Illinois. We grew a vast array of fruits and vegetables year round (both in our fields and nine greenhouses). Our favorite u-pick season was of course, apple season! All year we patiently waited for the crisp, autumn air to fall as we knew that apple season was upon us. During the fall months, we held a large “fall festival” with face painting, pumpkin bowling, hay rack rides, a sanctuary-farm petting zoo, apple picking, pony rides, hay maze and most importantly, our wildly famous apple cider-flavored mini donuts! We made our apple cider mini donuts hot and fresh right inside our donut trailer while our customers watched!

After four amazing years on the farm, we made the decision to move back to the best state in the country, Minnesota! After leaving the farm, our customers begged us to keep making our wildly popular apple cider-flavored mini donuts. It was then that we took our apple cider donut making skills on the road and began popping up at other small business locations. Our customer base started with our farm and quickly spread like wildfire! When we moved to Minnesota we knew we wanted to continue doing this and wanted to name our truck something “Minnesotan” with an up north feel and… here we are! As a mobile donut cart, we have the ability travel around the state at small business “pop up” locations. We make and serve our delicious apple cider-flavored mini donuts on site, right in front of you, and serve them piping HOT (along with other seasonal refreshments like lemonade and cider slushies, hot chocolate with jumbo marshmallows and a Nutella drizzle etc.)! Now, you don’t have to wait until apple season to get your apple cider donut fix…we’re going to bring them to you all year – YES even in the winter! To learn about where we’ll be, LIKE us on Facebook and Instagram under “North Star Donuts” where we excitedly post all our pop-up events which happen in a new place every weekend all across the Land of 10,000 Lakes!

This year, we are so thrilled to have partnered with the University of Minnesota’s Apple House located just down the street from the Arboretum out in Victoria! We have a temporary second truck parked there and we are open every Weds-Sunday 10AM-6PM now through October! Our original truck is still out on the road on weekends popping up in new locations that we announce on Facebook and Instagram! We also do giveaways and contests weekly for free donuts so be sure to LIKE us so you don’t miss out! Find us on both Facebook and Instagram under: “North Star Donuts”.

If you’d like to partner with us and bring donuts to your event/location fill out the RESERVE form to inquire. Additionally, we love to help organizations raise money. Use the FUNDRAISE form to tell us more about your fundraising event.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

We weren’t sure whether booya was going to be a thing this year. With the pandemic and social distancing, it seemed like maybe a lot of organizations were going to skip a year of offering the thick stew, cooked over an open flame. But a few brave places are offering takeout so you can get your fix. We imagine that those organizations are going to be very busy, so we advise arriving early.

We do have a very notable newcomer this year in Saint Paul Brewing (688 E. Minnehaha Ave., St. Paul; 651-698-1945; stpaulbrewing.com), which will be serving booya from 3 p.m. until close on Thursday nights, starting Sept. 17. If you haven’t been to the brewery, it was recently taken over by the owners of Can Can Wonderland and the previously primitive patio transformed into something that can best be described as an art park with lots of seating and beer, of course. They also serve really good wood-fired pizzas.

Here are the rest of the events that we know of right now:

Oct. 3: Croatian Hall, 445 S. Second Ave., South St. Paul; noon until gone.

Oct. 3: Roseville VFW Post 7555, 1145 Woodhill Drive, Roseville; 11 a.m. until gone. 16 ounces, $5; 32 ounces, $9; scoop, $5.

Fried Chicken is All We Want to Eat Right Now… and a New Crop of Restaurants Are Here for It

Fried Chicken is All We Want to Eat Right Now… and a New Crop of Restaurants Are Here for It

 Chx Minneapolis/Facebook

As restaurants continue to open, many are focused on crusty comfort food. Fried chicken claims the dubious honor of being 2020’s favorite food!

Eater Twin Cities: There isn’t much the world can agree on right now, with a global pandemic launching a legion of armchair epidemiologists, pundits, and educators, but even as the dumpster fire of a year drifts on, there is one sign of hope. It is crispy battered, fried, juicy, hot and readily available: fried chicken.

These new eateries are opening with focus place firmly on crispy, hot, juicy, bird with a couple of vegan approximations of the dish to make this comfort dining even more inclusive.

Chicken Republic – Minneapolis

Opening on September 30, this new fried chicken-centric restaurant is a part of a virtual food hall from Luke Shimp, who also owns the Red Rabbit and Red Cow restaurants. There are several online only restaurants to delivery food around the metro area. Chicken Republic will serve fried chicken sandwiches on brioche buns and whole fried chickens. The chicken will be available dipped hot, sweet and spicy, basic, and more. There are also vegan chicken fingers on the menu.

Chx – Minneapolis

Walk-up ready chicken fingers and crinkle cut fries are available from a window at Uptown’s Pourhouse. The menu is lean and focused with buttery biscuits rounding out the offerings. There are no fancy rubs, no flavor options to choose from, just simple, comforting crusty battered fingers and a line down the street. Orders are only available on site for now, with plans to expand to delivery in the future, once they get caught up with the current high demand.

Nashville Coop – St. Paul

This new St. Paul restaurant on Snelling Avenue has been sporting lines out the door since opening. The business went from the most popular new food truck of the season to a permanent location earlier this month. According to the its owners, the popularity of this crispy fried fingers served either on their own with a side of fries or in sandwich form, are causing a strain on chicken suppliers. Open for lunch and dinner, the chicken often sells out. Order it gently spiced or crazy hot, with a couple of spice levels in between.

A seriously spiced, crispy fried chicken breast dominates a buttery bun with pickle rounds on the top and bottom with a layer of slaw on the bottom. Juices are dripping off the sandwich and pooling on the plate.

Ope! at Saint Dinette – St. Paul

Saint Dinette in Lowertown has been pivoting all over the place in the era of the new now. Currently, the eatery is running a pop-up called Ope! that includes a selection of Minnesota-friendly dishes, including seven layer salad, tuna noodle casserole and fried chicken tenders. Served with the requisite ranch on the side.

Wendy’s House of Soul – Minneapolis

Newly relocated restaurant has brought its signature soul rolls to a new part of North Minneapolis. Also on the menu are a collection of saucy and dry rubbed wings, also available as part of a meal deal with waffles, whipped butter, and maple syrup.

Several containers are overflowing with wings piled up and covered with different sauces. A doughnut sits in the middle of the table, a nod to the location inside Glam Doll Donuts Northeast location where B.A.D. Wingz will open

B.a.d. Wingz

This is the second restaurant from Gerard and Brittany Klass. The duo also own Soul Bowl, known for neo-soul food as well as some legendary fried chicken sandwiches. The new spot operates inside the Northeast Glam Doll Donuts. On the menu are both chicken and some vegan wings to appease all lovers of fried things and a side of ranch.
