Minnesota Landscape Arboretum: Introducing Triumph™ Apple Tree

Minnesota Landscape Arboretum: Introducing Triumph™ Apple Tree

30 years in the making, the newest UMN Apple, Triumph™ will be an environmental improvement and a useful apple for organic growers and for home growers. Plus consumers will benefit from apples with fewer if any chemical sprays.

Find out more about the brand new UMN apple from the Arb’s Horticultural Research Center (their 28th apple introduction), how long it took to make, what its name means, what it tastes like, why it was developed and when you can get a tree for your yard.

A Triumph over apple scab!

The latest apple cultivar from the University of Minnesota renowned apple breeding team is a triumph! Triumph™, MN80 cultivar, has been released to nurseries for propagation and growers can now start placing orders for trees to plant starting in 2021.

Triumph™, which was created by crossing ‘Honeycrisp’ and ‘Liberty’, produces attractive fruit with occasional stem bowl russeting. It has shown excellent scab tolerance and contains two forms of genetic scab resistance.

Taste-wise, Triumph™ is a pleasantly tart and well-balanced red apple with good storage life. It will be ready to harvest in late September, similar to or slightly later than its parent ‘Honeycrisp’ and is hardy to USDA zone 4.

Triumph™ has been released as an “open variety” (tree royalty only) which means growers can purchase trees directly from nurseries that are licensed by the University of Minnesota to propagate and sell Triumph™ apple trees. Nurseries that are interested in obtaining a license to propagate and sell Triumph™ should contact Technology Commercialization.

The following nurseries are currently licensed to propagate and sell Triumph™ trees:
• Cameron Nursery (WA)
• Gold Crown Nursery (WA)
• Moser Fruit Tree Sales (MI)
• Bailey Nurseries (MN)
• Adams County Nursery (PA)
• Schlabach’s Nursery and Orchard (NY)
• Wafler Family Orchard (NY)

This list will be updated on the Licensed Nurseries: Apples Page.

Consumers will need to wait to get their first bite of Triumph™ as it takes several years for new trees to bear fruit. But those interested in growing their own apple trees can purchase this new variety as it becomes available at local nurseries over the next several years. Visit UMN Extension to learn more about growing apple trees in your home garden.

“Quincy Corner” Just Got A Little Fancier – Northeast, Minneapolis

“Quincy Corner” Just Got A Little Fancier – Northeast, Minneapolis

If you asked google to find the best place in Minneapolis for custom suits, you’d likely find @kingbrosclothiers

These @northeastminneapolis locals, @kennyking4 & @dannygusking, are the twin brothers + business partners behind the specialized bespoke suits at @kingbrosclothiers

They started 10 years ago as a line of ties, but as the years went on they realized custom clothing was their long-term goal.

For the last 6 years they’ve been operating out of a NE studio space, but almost 2 weeks ago, they transitioned to a new retail space on the block of Quincy St NE & 15th Ave NE.

Their current little tin space is totally unassuming on the outside. It was vacant for years and then turned into an Airbnb for a stint. It’s a space that doesn’t catch your eye… until you go inside, and that’s exactly what they wanted, something with a bit of a “wow” factor.

The same reaction is true of their clients when they try on their custom suits! Kenny and Danny work hard to keep their clients feeling good, which isn’t difficult when you’re personally sourcing fabric from some of the best mills in England and Italy.

Clothing has always meant a lot to the King Bros. Growing up as twins meant they had to share everything — a room, a car, a womb — so clothing was the only thing they had for themselves. If they didn’t wear something different from each other, no one would be able to tell them apart. So that became a “unwritten rule” of theirs, to never share clothing, and that still holds true today.

When asked why they love NE so much, their answer was synonymous — it’s a booming area with so much to do. They love that “Quincy Corner” provides options for their clients to stay and support the local establishments after a fitting, creating a sense of community.

They have clients who tell them they schedule their fittings at certain times so they can grab a beer at @indeedbrewing or tacos at @centro_mpls afterwards, and we think that’s pretty great!

Glensheen Mansion: Spirit of the Lights

Glensheen Mansion: Spirit of the Lights

Glensheen Mansion

Glensheen’s outdoor light display, Spirit of the Lights, and Christmas Candlelight Tours in the mansion will be offered every Friday & Saturday night in March.

Even though the typical holiday season is over, we threw out the rule book on Christmas and have extended the holiday tour season. Due to COVID closures, we weren’t able to offer our popular Christmas Candlelight tours and outdoor light display, Spirit of the Lights to the public this past December. So here’s your chance!

Spirit of the Lights is an outdoor light display that originated on Park Point at the home of Marcia Hales. The display is celebrated for its intimate and natural feel. Many of the motifs and displays are in memory of individuals or in recognition of meaningful moments. The display sprawls across Glensheen’s 12-acre lakeside estate, magically illuminating the grounds. Many of the display’s pathways will remain unplowed, making a nighttime snowshoe experience the perfect way to enhance Spirit of the Lights. Glensheen has snowshoes available for free rental.

Due to daylight saving time, there will be various event times:

  • March 21st – April 4th (Fri & Sat)
  • Spirit of the Lights entry 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm (presale only)
  • Candlelight Tour entry 7:30pm – 8:30pm

Minnesota Museum of American Art – “Outer Experiences: Black Life in Rural and Suburban Minnesota”

Minnesota Museum of American Art: Now open in the M’s window galleries!

Reflect on this exhibition’s title. What types of stories do you think might be told? What words come to mind when you consider these experiences?⁣
⁣…

In partnership with The African American Interpretive Center of Minnesota (AAICM), the M is proud to present Outer Experiences: Black Life in Rural and Suburban Minnesota, on display in the M’s window galleries on Robert and 4th Streets, opened Thursday, February 25, 2021.

The exhibition, curated by AAICM Executive Director JoJo Bell, explores the experience of being Black outside of the Twin Cities. Drawing from AAICM’s archives and oral history project, it features photographs by Chris McDuffie alongside excerpts from interviews with Black Minnesotans who had formative experiences in rural or suburban parts of the state. Outer Experiences amplifies the voices of Black Minnesotans and the underrepresented histories that connect them to their homes. The photographs and interviews explore the  narrators’ family histories, their lives in small-town Minnesota, and their experiences of living on the margins of Black and white society.

Themes of self-discovery, belonging, and W.E.B. Du Bois’ Double Consciousness are captured in narrator words and photography by Chris McDuffie.

The AAICM’s oral history project was made possible by a grant from the Minnesota Historical Society. Outer Experiences: Black Life in Rural and Suburban Minnesota is generously sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota.
