Because we care about safe and ethical working conditions, all of our product is designed, sampled, and produced under one roof. We also care about sustainability and work primarily with natural fibers – cotton, bamboo, silk, wool, linen, and any synthetics used are from deadstock fabric (meaning the fabric may have slight flaws which we work around, or is no longer in production and available in limited quantities).
Minnesota’s many restaurants provide endless opportunities to grab a good bite to eat. Whether you’re craving pizza, burgers, steak, or something else entirely, you’ll find it here. But sometimes, you just don’t know what you crave. That’s when it’s a great idea to go to a restaurant that is known for one famous dish. It takes the guesswork out of perusing the menu, and you’re guaranteed an amazing meal. The nine restaurants below are each known for a single menu item. When you visit the restaurants, we advise that you try their famous item at least once!
Matt’s Bar might just be one of the most famous places to grab a bite in Minnesota. Their famous Jucy Lucy – a delicious, melted cheese-filled burger – is one of the only items on their small menu. It’s so good that this spot often has a line going out the door!
Lindey’s is a longstanding spot known for its delicious prime rib. In fact, it’s one of the only things on the menu! A prime steak platter also comes with hash browned potatoes, garlic bread, salad, and pickled watermelon rind. It’s seriously delicious.
Small town Grandy, Minnesota, is home to Brass Rail, an unassuming spot with a surprisingly big following. People come for miles for the mouthwatering broasted chicken. Served with coleslaw, toast, and your choice of potato, this perfectly crisp chicken is a meal you won’t soon forget.
Minnesota may be about as far from the ocean as you can get, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t amazing seafood to be had here! There are plenty of amazing options here, but one standout favorite is the lobster roll. Chilled lobster salad is served with cucumber and tarragon on griddled milk bread alongside a pile of Cajun fries. Trust us, this is a meal you won’t soon forget.
There are many pizza chains in the Twin Cities – and in Minnesota s a whole – but few make a Minnesota-style pizza quite as good as the one at Red’s Savoy. The dough is cracker-thin and spread with sauce, plenty of cheese, and loads of toppings. Once baked, the pizza is cut into squares. It’s a uniquely Minnesotan pizza style, and it’s absolutely delicious.
Time and again, Tavern on Grand has been recognized for its amazing walleye sandwiches. You can get yours blackened, grilled, or deep-fried. All are topped with lettuce, tomato, and tartar and served on a toasted ciabatta bun. As soon as you take a bite, you’ll understand why so many flock to this restaurant.
Did you know that the Twin Cities is a hotbed of amazing Vietnamese food? There are many outstanding restaurants that serve up amazing banh mi, pho, and more. One favorite of many is the longstanding Quang Restaurant. This unassuming spot is especially known for its pho. You can load your broth with beef, chicken, seafood, or veggies – or all of the above. It makes for a hearty, warm, perfectly slurpable meal that you’ll keep coming back for.
Way up on northern Minnesota’s Gunflint Trail, you may expect fish to be the big-ticket item for nearby restaurants. And it’s true that many do serve up amazing seafood. But the Trail Center Lodge is most known for its enormous, bigger-than-your-plate pancakes. Stop in and see if you can come close to finishing this behemoth breakfast.
Wild rice soup is a state favorite, and you can find an amazing example of it at Cornerstone Cafe in Monticello. This flavorful, creamy soup has been recognized as the best in the state by local media! If you’re craving hot, delicious Minnesota comfort food, this is the place.
Gales of November is the LSMMA’s premier fundraising event for the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center. What began almost 30 years ago as a small gathering of divers sharing shipwreck pictures, has grown into a festive two-day educational, networking event.
Due to the increasing numbers of COVID infections and hospitalizations in our region, the board of the Lake Superior Marine Museum Association has opted to cancel its in-person Gales of November.
We will be hosting virtual presentations 3 evenings in mid November and planning a silent auction and raffle.
The month of November breathes force into Lake Superior each and every year. For those of us lucky enough to experience the strength of Lake Superior, it marks the time when fall is coming to end, and winter wishes to take over — but the lake fights the change of seasons with all its might. The “Gales of November” occurs when cold, dry air from Northern Canada converges with warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico over the Great Lakes. On top of the mixture of air, all of this is stirred up with the warm summer water of the Great Lakes. The result from this is one of nature’s most unpredictable times. Wind speeds can reach over 50 miles per hour, and waves look like something from an angry ocean. Yet, from the shoreline, these storms are treated with respect and awe — witnessing them is an experience that no one should pass up.
The “Gales” of November” got its name from a song by Gordon Lightfoot about the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was an American Great Lakes freighter full of taconite pellets that sank in a Lake Superior storm on November 10, 1975, with the loss of the entire 29 crewmen. Radio transmissions looking for the Fitzgerald or any survivors lasted until 9:30 pm on November 13th, 72 hours after the last communication from the Fitzgerald: “We are holding our own.”
Each year, on the anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Split Rock Lighthouse hosts a remembrance event where the lighthouse and fog signal remains on throughout the day, then goes silent for a bit while the names of the lost crew members are read and a ship’s bell is rung in their remembrance.

A Loon’s purview of Minnesota history…and how “North” came to be:
Historical: Minnesota became the 32nd State of the Union on May 11, 1858. A small extension of the northern boundary makes it the most “northerly” of the 48 contiguous United States. (This peculiar protrusion is the result of a boundary agreement with Great Britain before the area had been carefully surveyed.) Minnesota is bounded by the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario to the north, by Lake Superior and Wisconsin to the east, by Iowa to the south and South Dakota and North Dakota to the west.
Contemporary: The moniker, “North”, description is an interesting confluence of recent history. I read an original article by Tim Gihring in 2014, shortly after returning to my native Minnesota from living in NYC. (The article was followed up in 2018 by the writer). Gihring was perhaps considered the author of the “North” inception. My initial curiosity was sparked in the use of “North”, and the author observed how the machinations of “North” evolved; advertised in tag lines and marketed for public consumption.
This is how and why doitinnorth.com came to light. As I watched, listened to the disparate definitions and uses of “North”, I could not gather a substantive or definitive answer, as to what it meant or where to go to find this “North” expression. So here, a home site has been created for “North” with doitinnorth.com, combining the unique history and crafted cultures of Minnesota by sharing for us the insiders and the out-of-towners looking in, with selections of curated Minnestoa events/locations, style/mode, art/design, people/places, shop/share, eat/drink.
