When Paul Bunyan Dined at A-Pine Restaurant Serving Pequot Lake for over 50 years! – Pequot Lakes, MN

A-Pine is a Family Restaurant serving American style comfort food in a North woods Atmosphere!

HISTORY

Some say, Paul Bunyan was born in Maine … But, here in Minnesota we know better!

Imagine, if you can, the excitement that was caused by the birth of Paul Bunyan! It took five giant storks, working overtime, to deliver him to his parents. As a child, Paul played with an axe and crosscut saw like the other children played with toys. On his first birthday his father gave him a pet blue ox named Babe.

Paul and Babe grew quickly. In fact, they became so large that the tracks they made gallivanting around Minnesota filled up and make the 10,000 lakes. Lakes close by the spot you’re now standing are the fourteen interconnected lakes of the Whitefish Chain, Sibley, Pelican, and the Ossawinamakee Chain.

Although Paul logged the northwoods from coast to coast, one of his favorite places was the Pequot Lakes area. His large bobber got stuck on top of the water tower smack dab in the middle of town during an epic fishing battle with a wily northern named Notorious Nate.

A TRAIL BEARING HIS NAME IS JUST ACROSS HIGHWAY 371

The Paul Bunyan Trail is a 100 mile long multi-use paved trail that winds through many towns and past lakes and rivers. Pine River, six miles north of here, is the birthplace of Paul Bunyan.

Also named after the logger, the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway boasts 54 miles of beautiful scenery, recreation, and area history and culture. Just out the A-Pine driveway in access to the spine of the Byway, County Road 16 heading east toward Crosslake. Stop inside for a detailed map.

Like the intricacies of a good Paul Bunyan tale, the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway cleverly weaves together the stories of a well traveled past. Read more about it on the fourteen interpretative kiosks along the route. Tour in your car, pedal your bike or just put on some good walking shoes. Here’s your invitation to the lakes and lands that helped give life to the Great Northwoods and the Legend of Paul Bunyan.

ONE OF PAUL’S MOST NOTABLE FEATURES WAS HIS BURLY SIZE

A man that size needed grand comrades too. Appetites of the hard-working ‘jacks and Paul Bunyan himself kept two comrades, camp cook, Sourdough Sam, and baker Creampuff Fatty, mighty busy making food. In fact, legend holds that Sourdough Sam made flapjacks in a griddle so large that fifty youths strapped pork rinds to their feet and skated around to grease it.

While logging in the northwoods of Minnesota, Paul Bunyan discovered the A-Pine Restaurant nestled under century old Norway Pines. Exhausted from hard work and his constant travels, Paul sat right down and enjoyed a hefty, hearty A-Pine meal.

Shirt buttons ready to pop and very tired, Paul set up his tent across County Road 16 on the current site of the AmericInn Lodge and Suites. Paul slept so soundly, it took seven hours of cannon fire from Fort Ripley to wake him for his tee time and the Wildwedge Golf and Mini Golf.

Paul’s caddy then was Fanny, Babe’s girlfriend. She’s still there! You can see her waiting for Paul at the Clubhouse along with Paul’s set of custom made giants clubs and his big cart.

IN 2008, PAUL BUNYAN WAS INVITED BY THE OWNERS OF THE A-PINE RESTAURANT TO MAKE A CAMP IN JENKINS

Paul, ever the schmoozer, loved the idea of being in the midst of all the Lake Country folks.

So, today, Paul Bunyan stands proud and welcomes everyone through the Gateway of the Whitefish Area. He invites you hungry ones to stop in at the A-Pine Restaurant for your own hefty, hearty meal-the same delicious eatin’ that nearly popped Paul’s shirt buttons years ago! Grab a giant cookie from the Paul Bunyan Cookie Company or stop in at the A-Pine Express for a quick snack before hitting the road, the Trail or the Byway.

Thanks for stopping by … & hurry back!

Northrop Centennial Commission: Rooted in the expansive South Indian dance form of, Ragamala Dance Company manifests a kindred relationship between the ancient and the contemporary. In their latest evening-length performance, Fires of Varanasi: Dance of the Eternal Pilgrim, eleven dancers conjure a realm where time is suspended and humans merge with the divine. Award-winning creators Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy imagine a metaphorical crossing place that enters into a ritualistic world of immortality, evoking the birth-death-rebirth continuum in Hindu thought to honor immigrant experiences of life and death in the diaspora. This work is the culmination of a two-year partnership with Northrop that included a reimagined 2020-21 Ragamala Rooted residency with free monthly engagement activities.

Bright Hair Color Is Cool In 2022: It’s All About “French Glossing” & “Frosting”

Bright Hair Color Is Cool In 2022: It’s All About “French Glossing” & “Frosting”

Refinery29: The thing about hair color is that the “trends” tend to be cyclical and a little boring if you consider that the hair growing out of your head can be bucketed into one of the base categories: black, brown, blonde, red, gray, or white. Still, there are degrees of variation and, of course, colors that fall out of the natural spectrum and come from bleach and hair dye.
What’s fun is that in 2022 the “trends” (as they were) are less about the colors themselves and more about the new techniques, exacting placement, and the way that they speak to the general feeling of the time. Ahead, we break down the top hair-color trends upcoming for 2022. Scroll through and consider your hair and what you want to do with it in the new year.

Bright Color

If you’re considering going brighter with your color, now’s the time to do it big and go coppergolden peach-tinted, or a periwinkle purple (like Pantone’s 2022 color of the year, Very Peri). According to celebrity hairstylist and Leonor Greyl ambassador Trace Henningsen, the color itself is yours to decide, but brightness is the vibe. “Mood boosting colors will leave you with a vivacious appetite for joy and positivity, instantly giving you strong appeal and inciting feelings of optimism,” she says.
It doesn’t need to be a salon appointment either; you could try an at-home color kits from IGK or Madison Reed. Or a less-dramatic option: a color-enhancing conditioner from dpHueLeonor Greyl, or the one from KeraColor that went viral on TikTok.

Hair Frosting

Hair frosting is like the grown-up version of babylights, where the bleached strands are carefully sprinkled throughout the hair, almost strand by strand (visualize snow falling atop a tree). “Frosting typically uses small, cool-blonde tones to contrast the darker base color,” colorist Stuart Marsh tells R29. “It’s easy to maintain, as it’s designed to blend into your natural hair color.” Stuart says that hair frosting creates a really soft, multidimensional look. “The results can create full layers of color with a detailed finish that never appears ‘overdone.'”
This visual — Madison Bailey styled by hair pro Graham Nation — is a good example of hair frosting, blonde over brunette. Other celeb examples of the vibe include Halle BerrySuki Waterhouse, and Dakota Johnson — all hand-colored by Tracey Cunningham.

French Glossing

Less of a color trend and more of a shine-enhancement, “French glossing” is another salon service on the rise. L’Oreal Paris-affiliated salons offer the treatment, which is similar to a traditional in-salon hair gloss, offering both depth and shine.
Refinery29 contributor Maybelle Morgan experienced the new treatment and described the process: “Permanent hair color is applied to the roots, while an ammonia-free gloss is distributed through the mid-lengths to ends using a gradient technique, which brings out different tones in your hair and lends lengths a modern, ombré effect,” she explains. According to L’Oréal, the result is “Seamless, light-reflective color that screams Parisian chic, like adjusting the brightness on a computer screen.”

An evolution of the “money-piece” highlights, hair contouring is all about highlighting the baby hairs that frames the face in a soft and delicate way. “The hair contour is softer than a money piece, it’s not a color block, so it’s there’s lower contrast,” explains hairstylist and colorist Tom Smith. “The benefit is that is lightens the strands around the face and into the hairline, and it lifts the face. ”

The style has already started to take off on TikTok, with the hashtag for #haircontouring amount millions of video tutorials — and it’s easy to see why. Not only does this look frame your face nicely, but it is also fairly low-maintenance as you’re sectioning off only the front pieces of hair. “To achieve this look simply ask your hairstylist for a lift around your face that’s a shade or two lighter than your natural color,” offers Smith, adding: “You’ll be right on trend.”
