Potluck String Band

In the Potluck String Band, everyone brings something to the table, and, as often happens when creating something together, the result is more than the parts that made it. Call it joy, call it good old-fashioned fun, call it a bunch of strings strummed into a heart-opening chord.

Katey Bellville

With a nostalgic appreciation for old-time tunes, Katey Bellville inevitably pines for traditional sounds while composing contemporary songs. Raised both in the rolling hills of the country on horseback and deep in the heart of the city of Minneapolis, she has always stirred a brew of reverse passions. Dedicated listeners describe her original songs as ‘unforgettable’, blending modern pop sensibilities with fundamental bluegrass instrumentation.

Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney recorded their “Let’s Rock” follow-up at Auerbach’s Nashville studio, Easy Eye Sound. The duo made Delta Kream with musicians Kenny Brown and Eric Deaton. “It was a very inspiring session with Pat and me along with Kenny Brown and Eric Deaton in a circle, playing these songs,” Auerbach remarked in a press release. “It felt so natural.”

Carney added, “The session was planned only days in advance and nothing was rehearsed. We recorded the entire album in about 10 hours, over two afternoons, at the end of the ‘Let’s Rock’ tour.”

We’re six months into lockdown.

While day-to-day pandemic living mostly stays the same, nature is moving on and giving us a new season. Like every other industry, the arts scene has had to adapt. Museums have slowly reopened with restrictions, bookstores have upped their curbside pickup game, and concerts have moved to parking lots and patios… for now.

The following are a few highlights in dark times. Check before heading out, however, as events have been known to cancel or move online at a moment’s notice.

MUSIC: Click here to find out what musicians and music venues have been played and are upcoming to this season.

ART: Galleries and museums are offering things both online and in-person.

BOOKS: We’ve previews a couple great reads, compiled a list of authors hosting virtual readings, and put together a list of indie bookstores in town.

Director Jim Jarmusch and composer Carter Logan (aka avant-garde post-rock duo SQÜRL) perform live to four surrealist and dreamlike silent films by artist Man Ray. They’ll create the semi-improvisational scores onstage in the Walker Cinema, with loops, synthesizers, and effected guitars that display the band’s experimental, ambient, and drone-like tendencies. Featuring Le retour à la raison (Return to Reason) (1923), Emak Bakia (1926), L’étoile de mer (The Starfish) (1928), and Les mystères du château de dé (The Mysteries of the Château de Dé) (1929). 68 min.

Titles by Man Ray are in the Ruben/Bentson Moving Image collection. Major support to preserve, digitize, and present the Ruben/Bentson Moving Image Collection is generously provided by the Bentson Foundation.
