‘Inspired by the little things’…small batch basement pottery from Duluth, MN
…
Sometimes a project comes up out of the blue – this was a fun one for @ursa_minor_brewing upcoming hill climb & trail race! I might have to start making steins more often!
…
My name is Chelsey Wingness, born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota. Growing up, I spent countless hours in the woods, exploring & unknowingly rooting myself with nature. My intentions are to bring nature into everyday lives. As we progress into our modern world I find it even more important to connect with the earth. What better way than through an object of everyday use?
Pottery & I collided while I was working on my AFA at Lake Superior College. I’ve always been a creative person, but the medium of clay took over any other art form I happened to be working with. I am happiest while forming the clay, structurally, my pieces are more sculpture like with intentional glazing. I want my pieces to strike joy in those who use them.
I am beyond grateful for the support I was given as a child from my parents. My creativity was encouraged to be itself from the beginning & I plan to follow though with it until the end.

Thank you @minneapolislakes for the Retail + Shopping Feature on S+J in this month’s magazine issue!
…
With its exposed beams, concrete floors, large windows, black and gray hues, and great music, Serge + Jane has a hip urban feel. And no, it’s not a nightclub, but a local retail store where shopping is an immersive experience.
A lifestyle boutique, Serge + Jane opened in November 2019 and was literally designed from the ground up by Jamie and Casey Carl. Coming from a retail background at Target, they used their expertise and thought outside the box when it came to creating their own store. And, they chose to build it at 44th & France in Edina because they live in the area and wanted it to be near their friends and neighbors.
The atmosphere of the store is laid back, sexy, and passionate. “It’s very crisp and chic,” says Jamie. “It’s meant to feel a little bit urban in a suburban area. We are adjacent to Minneapolis and wanted to channel that downtown vibe.” Even the name has a cool story to it, which you can find on its website: @sergeandjane
Her husband Casey creates all the music sets that are played in the store. “Music plays a huge role in the experience when you’re shopping,” says Jamie.
And since Casey’s passion is music, especially on vinyl, the store has a great selection of vinyl records for sale. “Even before COVID, vinyl was making a comeback, but what we saw during COVID with people spending so much time at home was that they enjoyed the ritual of listening to an album they remembered or discovering new artists and sitting down and listening to music and hearing it how it was recorded,” she says. “It has a live feeling to it and not as manufactured as what you will find on a streaming channel. You’ll hear the grit and maybe feel like you’re a little bit closer to the music.”
The three large retail floors are filled with merchandise for every member of the family, especially when it comes to apparel. “Our clothing style is very laid back and influenced by the West Coast,” says Jamie. “We have different brands than what’s usually available around here and we want it to feel casual. So even if it’s a dressy occasion, it still feels very effortless and sophisticated but not too overdone or fussy. And that’s how I hope people feel when they enter our space.”
In addition to clothing, accessories and home goods, Serge + Jane also carries some great toys, apparel, and other pet related items, and shoppers can even bring their dogs with them. The pet bakery is also a big hit with its cookies, cupcakes, and treats made by a group of neighborhood teenage entrepreneurs.
Jamie and Casey feel strongly about buying local and supporting local, so shoppers will find plenty of unique merchandise from various area vendors.
“There’s a big maker’s market environment here,” says Jamie. “We do a lot of pop-up shop events so people can shop and meet the artists here as well.”
Another interesting aspect of Serge + Jane is the walking gallery in the stairwell. “We highlight local artists and have a launch party for them to kick it off with drinks and cocktails,” she says. “And, we change it out every three months.”
Jamie and her staff make sure everyone who comes through the doors feels welcome. “Our team is exceptional and customer service is very important to us,” she says. “Carol Werness, our store manager, has more retail experience than even Casey and I do. She owned her own store for years before she came on board with us. When people walk in, they are greeted and seen, so we’re very hands on with our clients. We want them to be happy with what they leave with.”
In addition to the everyday shopping experience, there are often fun events for shoppers to attend. Jamie’s last 10 years at Target were spent leading the internal events team, so she has been using those skills at Serge + Jane.
“At least every week or two we’re doing something where we’re utilizing our rooftop or our space in the store,” says Jamie. “We did a Mother’s Day event where moms shopped on all three floors and then were able to have champagne and individual charcuterie boards while hanging out on the rooftop.”
Reaching out and giving the community a place to gather and do something beyond shopping is something they strive to do. And although they have a great website for people to shop online, Jamie feels that there is something special about shopping in person.
“I do believe that people, even when rushed and with limited time, like to carve out an opportunity to see what’s new and what’s happening that they just can’t get from scrolling through websites. You get more out of it when you can see and touch things in person. There is an experience to be had when you come into our store.”

When you want to give something a little out of the ordinary, artful or inventive (but you aren’t a Pinterest pro), the Twin Cities offer a unique option: Museum Gift Shops.
…
Far from the tchotchke-laden shops of yore dotted with promotional material for the latest exhibit, today’s museum shops have modernized and expanded to offer the coolest and latest in design on the market, with a special focus on whatever that particular museum does best, of course.
Here are five Minneapolis museums with gift shops worthy of a special occasion. While you’re there, be sure to check out the exhibits; the gift recipient will never know your shopping trip was partly for you, too.
HANDMADE GIFTS BY MINNESOTA ARTISTS AT WAM SHOP

Browsing the Weisman Art Museum‘s colorful gift shop is practically a masterclass in supporting artists at every level. Buyer Marissa Onheiber stocks the shelves with beautiful pieces by artists who also take space in the gallery—and others who would love to be displayed there someday.
The pieces span from smaller local-artist gems, such as Silvercocoon and Yen Yin Chee, to bigger local companies, including toys by Jellycat and wood pieces by Woodchuck. And then there are the cool, worldly baskets imported by Kate Herzog’s House of Talents from her home village in Ghana.
SHOP FOR AUTHENTIC RUSSIAN GIFTS AT THE MUSEUM OF RUSSIAN ART

This Museum of Russian Art gift shop may be off the beaten path, but it’s perfect for anyone with Russian/Soviet roots, or those who appreciate them. Marvel at the intricate world that is Russian art by diving into the store, where you’ll find art and craft representing the culture. Think matryoshkas aplenty (those adorable, artful nesting dolls), amber jewelry and lacquer boxes, and even pieces from Poland, Lithuania and Estonia. Make a purchase here and you can be sure that no one will be showing up with a duplicate gift.
SHOP LIKE A SWEDE AT AMERICAN SWEDISH INSTITUTE

The American Swedish Institute shop is right on point, just by being itself. Nordic design has perhaps never been bigger, and the shop is there to serve the desire for all things clean and modern, yet full of character and vibrancy while somehow remaining restrained. Find jewelry, home decor and even fiction, all told from a Swedish perspective (or that of its neighboring countries).
FIND THE ARTSY GENERAL STORE OF YOUR DREAMS AT WALKER ART CENTER

This modern-art powerhouse, recognized worldwide for its peerless reputation, has a shop that lives up to the Walker Art Center’s rep. Not only a repository for the best collection of coffee table art books around—bring Yves Klein and friends home with you!—it stocks gorgeous jewelry, clever kids gifts, modern kitchenware (including plenty of the perennial favorite, Alessi) and smart office gear. It’s truly a one-stop shop for everyone on your list.
BROWSE THE BEAUTIFUL BOUTIQUE AT MINNEAPOLIS INSTITUTE OF ART

Mia’s boutique-within-a-museum—which got a revamp just a couple of years ago—is full of unputdownables. Beautiful flowing scarves and minimalist totes comingle with high-end kitchenware and home decor, plus kids toys, glasswork and jewelry. The shop manages to cover the spectrum of all the types of Minneapolis Institute of Art attendees—no easy feat—while still feeling like a cohesive whole.
