50th & France is a commercial district located in the area of West 50th Street and France Avenue South in the cities of Edina and Minneapolis. The district was a forerunner of the new concept of walkable urban neighborhood centers over five decades ago —a living example long before it became a popular trend. Today, it includes over 175 retail shops and offices. Shops include various apparel stores, craft stores, jewelers, restaurants, cafes, spas, salons, and the Edina Theatre.

The 50th & France Business & Professional Association provides marketing, management, promotional and event planning services to ensure that the vibrant commercial district offers goods, services and events to support an exceptional visitor experience.

The Association was founded in the 1970s by Hosmer A. Brown, D. Robert Sykes, along with Robert Kalland, Lyle Bing, Clair Peterson and others. They were among the group of 50th & France business leaders who brought the Association to life as it currently exists.

Among their leadership accomplishments through the Association are the streetscape improvements on both the Minneapolis and Edina sides of the business hub, the Edina Art fair, the Ewing parking lot (donated by Kalysboro Company, Inc.), streetscape maintenance, and holiday decorations.

In 2018, Nolan Mains started as a collaborative vision between the community and developers to completely reimagine an under utilized street of Edina’s famed 50th and France neighborhood into a vibrant center for community and commerce. Today, the development boasts 100 upscale apartments, a 5,000-square-foot plaza and a variety of high-end retail shops and restaurants. The momentum is continuing to grow the addition of new housing and commercial space in the years since and projected in the years to come.

Among the new stores is David Yurman, which will move from the Galleria to Southdale.

The Southdale Center‘s ongoing multi-million-dollar redevelopment is reaching a new phase with the announcement of new retailers entering the mall amid its plans to open a luxury wing in June.

Retailers for the new luxury wing, which is already fully leased, will be revealed in June along with details about the grand opening. Simon Property Group, which owns the Edina mall, says the revamp will feature more than 50 luxury retailers, including 16 market-exclusive brands and experiences, among them CAMP, Tory Burch, and State & Liberty.

Additionally, the mall will welcome Vineyard Vines, a clothing retailer, and the reopening of a renovated Banana Republic later this month.

Other openings announced on Wednesday include the young women’s casual clothing brand, Garage, which will open in November, and a Tommy Bahama shop slated to open in 2026.

Other recently announced stores stepping into Southdale include Reformation, Tecovas, ear piercing studio Rowan, Aritzia, Mango, Athleta, and JD Sports, among others.

The mall is touting a “Rediscover Southdale Center” event featuring exclusive parks, pop-ups and entertainment from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 14th.

Spice up your annual wardrobe refresh by hitting some of these new and opening-soon stores across the Twin Cities

Like flowers, we too tend to assume a period of rebirth when spring rolls around each year. As we shed our winter skins, we turn to fresh manicures, fresh chops, and, above all, fresh wardrobes to revive us after a long season of parka weather. Luckily, the Twin Cities is prepped to accommodate your spring overhauls this year, with a variety of new and opening-soon stores sweeping across its many malls and shopping districts. Check out our list of notable openings to imbue your seasonal shopping with an air of freshness this spring.

OPEN NOW: Studiiyo

You might recognize this trendy urban shop from its flagship Studiiyo 23 location in Uptown (or maybe even its second location in Studio City, Los Angeles). Owner Moh Habib has officially extended his sneaker-focused retail experience to Edina, setting up shop at Nolan Mains in the 50th & France neighborhood, and changing the name to simply Studiiyo—derived from the Japanese phrase “iiyo,” meaning “no problem,” “it’s OK,” or “sure, go ahead.” Known as the top Nike and Jordan destination in Minnesota, the shop brings an upscale, artful vibe to 50th & France, melding the effortless cool of street-style fashion with the sophistication of modern Japanese design.

OPEN NOW: New Balance Galleria/COMING SOON: New Balance Mall of America

There have been few comeback stories in fashion quite like that of New Balance—a brand that went from the “uncool” to the height of street-style fashion in less than a decade. The Galleria officially joined this sneaker revival by opening Minnesota’s first standalone New Balance location last fall, and Mall of America will soon follow suit with a New Balance concept store of its own (dates TBD). Shop the coveted trendy running shoes straight off the shelves at Galleria this spring to elevate your everyday style.

OPEN NOW: Inkwell Booksellers

The Twin Cities has long been known for its variety of independent bookstores and engaging literary experiences, and its newest bookstore-slash-cafe in the heart of Northeast Minneapolis is sure to extend that reputation. Inkwell Booksellers Co. now occupies the ground floor of Hencen apartments, and curates a selection of over 9,000 books across multiple genres, as well as locally made candles, apparel, and bookmarks. The conjoined cafe inspired by French coffee culture also serves up local favorites, including Wesley Andrews coffee and pastries from Rose Street Patisserie.

A former online-only brand until 2016, Alo’s second Twin Cities location marks a significant achievement in its rapid expansion, with over 50 stores now open across the United States.
