Start Tribune: Minnesota’s International Owl Center is auctioning its collection of artwork by Ukrainian kids — depicting owls of all kinds, from a technicolor flock to a finger-painted owlet — to benefit children in the war-torn country. “Here’s this sweet, innocent, colorful, beautiful, fun artwork made by children in Ukraine themselves. It gives people something really tangible to connect them with the kids over there,” center executive director Karla Bloem said. The
online auction of 59 children’s art, which closed March 20, raised more than $100,000, said Bloem. One piece sold for more than $8,000.

If you’re interested in bidding for some art of your own, it’s not too late. The center will likely have at least two more auctions and make a set of greeting cards featuring some of the owl art, Bloem said.

This piece is part of the latest auction.
All of the funds raised will be donated to UNICEF. Owl center staffers plan to try to contact the Ukrainian art schools and children who mailed in their artwork to let them know about the fundraising, Bloem said.
“Most art schools that participated are in eastern Ukraine, so we don’t know if we’ll be able to reach them,” she said “but we will try.”

The Olmsted County Historical Society was established in 1926 by Burton Eaton and several other founding members with the intention of collecting and preserving the history of Olmsted County. Our first museum opened in the basement of the Rochester Public Library in 1940. In 1959, we moved into what had been the Bethel English Lutheran Church, but soon outgrew the space. We then built a new museum building on land purchased in southwest Rochester in 1972, where we have been collecting, preserving, and educating ever since. In 2006, the Olmsted County Historical Society began doing business as the History Center of Olmsted County (HCOC).
The Olmsted County Historical Society dba History Center of Olmsted County is an independent, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization governed by members via a Board of Director. Each year we, together with our enthusiastic volunteers, provide presentations, educational and outreach programs, special events, museum exhibits, and more. We currently own and operate two historic buildings and two historic farmsteads, in addition to operating seasonal tours of Mayowood.

Northrop Centennial Commission: Rooted in the expansive South Indian dance form of, Ragamala Dance Company manifests a kindred relationship between the ancient and the contemporary. In their latest evening-length performance, Fires of Varanasi: Dance of the Eternal Pilgrim, eleven dancers conjure a realm where time is suspended and humans merge with the divine. Award-winning creators Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy imagine a metaphorical crossing place that enters into a ritualistic world of immortality, evoking the birth-death-rebirth continuum in Hindu thought to honor immigrant experiences of life and death in the diaspora. This work is the culmination of a two-year partnership with Northrop that included a reimagined 2020-21 Ragamala Rooted residency with free monthly engagement activities.
