Walker Art Center: In Memory, Claes Oldenburg – Minneapolis, MN

We fondly remember artist Claes Oldenburg, who passed away at the age of 93. Oldenburg embraced what he called “the poetry of everywhere” by uncovering the mystery and power of commonplace objects through morphing their scale, shape, and texture.
By the early 1980s, he had begun to make monumental outdoor works with Coosje van Bruggen, his artistic and life partner. “Spoonbridge and Cherry,” now an iconic symbol for the Twin Cities, is one of their most celebrated collaborations. This fountain-sculpture was the first artwork commissioned for the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, which opened in 1988.

 Midsummer Memory Mandalas Event

A Special Weekend That Includes a Public Art Installation and Hands-on Workshops to Transform Grief into Beauty Through Creative Expression!
Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis will once again welcome acclaimed earth artist Day Schildkret (@morningaltars) for its 4th Annual Midsummer Memory Mandalas event — an art installation and hands-on workshops designed to honor the impermanence of life and transform grief into beauty. Join us for this moving weekend of art, nature, and reflection.

Explore the beauty that can be found through grief and loss as Day uses foraged natural materials like rocks, seeds, and flowers gathered from Lakewood’s sacred grounds to create a brilliant and bright one-of-a-kind artwork. Through the very impermanence of these natural materials, this earth-art beautifully mimics the impermanence of life as it slowly returns to the grounds from which it was sourced. This healing process allows us to reflect on life, loss, and the beauty that can be found throughout this journey.

About

Meet the artist, listen to his story and watch the giant memory mandala take its final shape. Day will share his 7-step Morning Altars practice of creating impermanent earth altars made from nature, while exploring the importance of ritual in honoring life’s transition.

Lakewood’s 250 acres are filled with memorial markers, structures and sculptures built to pass the test of time. On Saturday, July 16, we will welcome a very different kind of creation. Artist Day Schildkret will use natural materials he has gathered from the cemetery and its surroundings over the course of several days to create a large-scale tribute to love and loss, using a hands-on practice that combines mindfulness, creative expression and connection with nature.

Sail on the Hjørdis – Grand Marais, MN

Sail on the Hjørdis – Grand Marais, MN

North House Folk School

Come sail Lake Superior on the Hjørdis! Our daily sail program has begun after a long winter, some excellent repairwork, and exciting new touches, we are very excited to get folks out on the water. Now taking bookings through June and look for July bookings to open. See Grand Marais from the best place in the County!

The flagship of the Grand Marais Harbor, Hjørdis shares the name of the mythical Norse goddess of war. Take a trip on this 50’ traditionally-rigged steel schooner and gain access to both the largest lake in the world and experience Grand Marais as it was approached in the centuries before Highway 61 — from the water.

The History of Hjørdis

Ken Woodward with Hjordis
The story of Hjørdis starts in a backyard near Detroit, Michigan in the early 1970s. Kenneth Woodward, a General Motors machinist and general foreman, bought plans from naval architect Thomas Colvin to build his Gazelle design, a 42’ junk-rigged schooner. Seven years and over 6,000 hours later, Kenneth splashed the boat and named it after his mother: Hjørdis. He and his wife Katey spent the next decade living aboard and sailing Hjørdis off the Florida coast. Fast forward to 1997 when Hjørdis was sold and eventually ended up on Lake Superior on the docks of a fledgling folk school. Given the rich history of schooners on Lake Superior, the North House board saw the intriguing possibilities of having a “floating classroom,” and the Hjørdis became a part of North House.
