This walk along Gateway State Trail will be lit with hundreds of candle luminaries!

From near Wildwood Elementary school to one mile down the trail you’ll enjoy a roundtrip will be a 2 mile walk. Enjoy bonfires for warmth and roasting marshmallows on both ends of the lit trail section; hot chocolate, cider and marshmallows will be available at the Stillwater Rd end. Come and enjoy a walk along this Minnesota State Trail! Leashed dogs are welcome. Ice traction devices are always recommended when walking in winter.

At The Great Northern, a celebration across Minneapolis and Saint Paul, visitors and locals alike will find amazing winter sports to spectate like pond hockey, skijoring, and fat-tire bike racing along with ice and snow sculpture competitions. Not to mention food-focused events featuring our thriving culinary community, outdoor concerts, and more.

This annual celebration brings together legacy festivals, including the City of Lakes Loppet Ski Festival, where cross-country skiing competitions excite and ice luminaries delight, the Saint Paul Winter Carnival, where kings and snow queens add to the magic of the season, and the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships where locals and players around the world show off their skills on Lake Nokomis.

These legacy events along with original, uniquely North programming are largely free to attend. So bundle up, get outside, and leave the hibernating to the bears!

Stillwater is honored to host the 2025 World Snow Sculpting Championship competition sanctioned by the Association Internationale de Sculpture sur Neige et Glace based in Finland. Teams from around the world will travel to Stillwater, Minnesota to create amazing snow sculptures while competing for prize money and the title of the World Champion. This will be a judged event and will include social events, activities, ceremonies, the people’s choice award, and will be fun for the whole family. The annual Gunflint Mail Run Sled Dog Race will be held at at Trail Center Lodge on the Gunflint Trail in Cook County!

The Gunflint Mail Run has adopted a new, simplified format that offers a 10-dog 65-mile-long race with a maximum of 15 teams in the field. The race is broken into two 32.5-mile legs separated by a mandatory rest at Trail Center Lodge.

The iconic Trail Center Lodge. is located 25 miles up the historic Gunflint Trail from Grand Marais, Minnesota. Lodging and visitor information available at visitcookcounty.com.

History

Dog sledding has been a part of the Gunflint Trail for years. Today it is generally thought of as racing or giving rides to tourists. The dogs are small fast animals that love to run at full speed. They follow trails through the woods and across the lakes. The very northeastern tip of Minnesota is Cook County, a land blessed with stunning beauty. We are also blessed with cold weather and snow here. It is in this land of remote beauty that dog sledding became a way of life. And it is this way of life that we celebrate with the Gunflint Mail Run Sled Dog Race.
