Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Exhibit: “2020… Cancelled“

Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Exhibit: “2020… Cancelled“

Pictured: When The World Changed – 40” X 30” Oil on Canvas – by Mary Calengor
The typed message, “2020… Cancelled“ and the crumpled newspaper tell the story of our current situation, frustrations while life as we know it has come to a halt.
The typewriter represents a historical milestone that affected the world in the same ways but ways far more positive. This marvelous invention connected us, changed the economy, and provided opportunity in the workplace for women. Hopefully we shall emerge a stronger, smarter, more compassionate society.
This painting shall be a reminder of these strange times and symbolic of positive changes that are a result of the difficulty we are experiencing today. Artists Rx: Responses during COVID-19 features work created by Minnesota artists since the pandemic started. The artworks — many rooted in nature, others finding inspiration from the built environment — are joined by the desire to find connection and joy, often amid isolation and fear.
The exhibit is open now through Jan. 6, 2021 in the Reedy Gallery and features work from Mary Calengor, Susan Davies, Leanne Hanson, Katy Noun and Darren Terpstra.

As we age, our capacity for creativity increases but often goes untapped. In Mia’s new series of virtual classes designed for adults aged 55+, we’ll learn how painting can be a journey of self-determination during times of uncertainty and discover our personal capabilities while forming meaningful connections with other participants.
These virtual class sessions take place online from 2-4p.m. on 11/9, 11/16, 11/23, 11/30, 12/07. Step-by-step instructions and materials will be provided. No painting experience, perceived talent, or specific knowledge necessary. We will have fun in the process of discovery.
This virtual class is part of an ongoing collaboration between the Cultural Wellness Center and Mia with generous support provided by Aroha Philanthropies.
The Bakken Museum: Find Your Spark. Change The World. – Minneapolis, MN

The Bakken Museum: Find Your Spark. Change The World. – Minneapolis, MN

The Spark exhibit challenges visitors to see scientific innovation as a creative process that often requires new ways of approaching everyday problems. Great innovations can be inspired by the humanities, nature, and even pop culture.

– Michael Sanders, President & CEO of The Bakken Museum

Inspiration and innovation are cornerstones of our human experience. Together they form a cycle of discovery that people use to shape the world. This cycle begins with a spark. A spark can be anything that transforms someone from a consumer into a creator. They motivate us to make what we want to see. They can be intensely personal or literally global in their scale. The Spark Exhibition explores these moments to reveal a diverse and uniquely human tradition, one that fuels our wildest imaginations and satisfies our most practical concerns. What inspires you? How will you innovate?

EXHIBIT HIGHLIGHTS:

  •  Innovation Inspired by Nature – walk through an immersive mural experience exploring the ways people use strategies from nature to solve human challenges.
  •  Bakkenspiel – play physical and digital musical instruments to discover computer and musical languages.

Walker Art Center: What does independence mean to you? Artist Jacob Lawrence made this artwork in response to this very question in celebration of the American Bicentennial. The colorful screenprint shows Black migrants casting ballots in a 1920s election—many experiencing this freedom for the first time after leaving the south where voting rights were severely restricted.

In Memoriam: Local Artist and World Builder Aldo Moroni

In Memoriam: Local Artist and World Builder Aldo Moroni

Aldo Moroni Studios: Last winter, Aldo Moroni learned that he had terminal stage 4 pancreatic cancer. It was cruel news; Moroni had just moved into a new studio space in the California Building and was preparing to start several new, multi-year projects. “All of a sudden everything changed,” Moroni told City Pages last November.  Last night, Aldo Moroni Studios posted a simple image, announcing that the inevitable had happened.

Moroni was an influential artist worldwide, but also in the Twin Cities, collaborating with and mentoring local talents, working out of the California Building for over 20 years. Minnesotans may be familiar with quite a few of his public art pieces. Life of Our State State of Our Lives can be seen at the State Capitol, and This River This Place, commissioned for the Federal Reserve Building, features a 3-D map of the upper Midwest.

Moroni is also known for his world-building projects, multi-year events where he would construct miniature villages and cities and invite revelers to drink wine and wreck them, only for him to return to rebuilding on top of the destruction. His most epic version was titled Babylon. In 2017, he celebrated 40 years in the art world with Trumptopia, a landscape of clay buildings exploring the impact that the Trump years would have on art.

“Artists have a responsibility to be political and make a statement,” Moroni told us before the opening reception. “That’s why I’m doing Trumptopia. You need to step up to the plate. You need to have a voice.”

His final project, M.EX. – Mesoamerican Experience, was to be a five-year work-in-progress where he would chronicle the history of Mesoamerica, touching on ancient societies like the Maya and Aztec, Spanish Imperialism, the Republic, and present-day Mexico. In the weeks following his announcement of his diagnosis, the piece became a community effort, as Moroni’s gallery hosted a handful of parties where folks were invited to help make buildings to add to the sculpture.

Shortly after graduating from MCAD, Moroni’s big break came in the late ‘70s. Martin Friedman, former director at the Walker Art Center, invited him to be part of a group show.

While Moroni was originally from Chicago, he spent most of his life in Minneapolis, creating art and raising two sons. He was a recipient of major fellowships from the big names around town: McKnight, Bush, and Jerome. His work has toured throughout the world.

“I always wondered, ‘What do they think about this crazy guy from Minnesota that makes little houses?’” Moroni pondered in a City Pages interview from 2017.

Moroni continued to create after his cancer diagnosis, raising funds for the Legacy Makers Place in the California Building. Once the pandemic slows down, the plan is to use the space for classes, workshops, and receptions for emerging and underfunded artists.

“I think the only way I can cope is that I work my way through it,” he told us in 2019. “The day will come, but it’s not today.”
