Walker Art Center: What Does Independence Mean To You? – Minneapolis, MN

Oct 9, 2020 | art/design

Jacob Lawrence, “The 1920’s…The Migrants Cast Their Ballots from Kent Bicentennial Portfolio,” 1974 – Collection Walker Art Center
Walker Art Center: What does independence mean to you? Artist Jacob Lawrence made this artwork in response to this very question in celebration of the American Bicentennial. The colorful screenprint shows Black migrants casting ballots in a 1920s election—many experiencing this freedom for the first time after leaving the south where voting rights were severely restricted.
