The Seven Pools at Thomas Lowry Park has been Completely Rebuilt! – Minneapolis, MN

Here’s a look at the scene as neighbors gathered to celebrate!

The Seven Pools is a graceful, manmade cascade of water through seven basins, surrounded by a pergola, brick walkways and complimentary landscaping. It’s located at 900 Douglas Ave. S, about a block west of the Hennepin-Lyndale split in Lowry Hill neighborhood.

It was designed by Phelps Wyman, a notable landscape architect and Minneapolis Park Commissioner from 1917 to 1924. The Pools feature was completed in 1925 when the park opened (it was called Mount Curve Triangles until 1984) and last underwent major repairs in 1953.

Special thanks to Friends of Thomas Lowry Park, which raised almost $350,000 to help fund the project.

LOLA ARTISTS WEEKEND EXTRAS

Why an Artist’s Weekend vs. a Crawl for 2021?

Quite simply, it’s resources. Many of our neighborhood businesses were heavily impacted by COVID and the Civil Unrest after the killing of George Floyd. We are foregoing any sponsorship requests this year because of this.  Enjoy the LoLa Artists Weekend to support our artists AND our beautiful neighborhood!

What is LoLa?

The League of Longfellow Artists (LoLA) began in the summer of 2009 as a small grassroots effort to raise the visibility of artists living or working in the Greater Longfellow Neighborhood of South Minneapolis. Artists Bob Schmitt, Anita White, and Shirley Neilson got together in the Longfellow community and said, “Let’s put on an art crawl!” LoLa has grown each year since 2009, when the crawl featured 42 artists at 20 sites. Nearly 10 years later, LoLa now flourishes as an annual art crawl that features more than a hundred neighborhood artists working in many different media.

In 2017 we became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We look forward to the expanded opportunities this status will bring our organization and appreciate your support along the journey.

Our Vision

LoLa is a volunteer-driven community organization that showcases, nurtures and supports Longfellow arts and artists. We strive to represent the diversity of the Longfellow neighborhood through the arts.

Our Mission

LoLa partners with neighborhood arts organizations, nonprofits, small businesses, and residents to design and host a variety of events and activities that:

• support Longfellow artists at any stage in their creative lives, and
• invite and encourage community participation in the arts.

“On Golden Pond’ by Ernest Thompson on Stage in the Spirit Of The North Theater! – Duluth, MN

“On Golden Pond’ by Ernest Thompson on Stage in the Spirit Of The North Theater! – Duluth, MN

Make it a dinner theater date by adding on a pre-show dinner or brunch packages from Boat Club Restaurant and Bar.

This is the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer that is sure to touch your heart and make you smile. The couple is returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for the forty-eighth year. He is a retired professor, nearing eighty, with heart palpitations and a failing memory—but still as tart-tongued, observant, and eager for life as ever. Ethel, ten years younger, and the perfect foil for Norman, delights in all the small things that have enriched and continue to enrich their long life together.

They are visited by their divorced, middle-aged daughter and her dentist fiancé, who then go off to Europe, leaving his teenage son behind for the summer. The boy quickly becomes the “grandchild” the elderly couple has longed for, and as Norman revels in taking his ward fishing and thrusting good books at him, he also learns some lessons about modern teenage awareness—and slang—in return.

In the end, as the summer wanes, so does their brief idyll, and in the final, deeply moving moments of the play, Norman and Ethel are brought even closer together by the incidence of a mild heart attack. Time, they know, is now against them, but the years have been good and, perhaps, another summer on Golden Pond still awaits.
