History

For over one hundred years, Como Park has played a vital role in meeting the recreational needs of residents of Saint Paul and surrounding communities. Inspired in part by the landscape designs of H.W.S. Cleveland, Frederick Nussbaumer, Superintendent of Parks from 1891 to 1922, worked tirelessly to create an outdoor haven for the area’s urban population. Nussbaumer strongly advocated for a wide variety of free or reasonably priced recreational activities, services, and educational opportunities for all park visitors. The park as we know it today continues to carry out this original vision.

Today Como Park Zoo & Conservatory is operated by the Saint Paul Parks and Recreation Department. The zoo features a seal island, a large cat exhibit, a variety of aquatic life, primates, birds, African hoofed animals and a world class polar bear exhibit. The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory has two acres under glass with a number of different wings dedicated to a variety of plant life including bonsai trees, ferns, orchids and seasonal flowers. The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory also features many outdoor gardens.

In 1994, the initial program planning and design concept was completed for the Como Education Resource Center (now the Visitor Center). $3.9 million in state bonding passed for the building in 1998, and in 2000, $16 million in state bonding passed for Como Education Resource Center Phase 2. In 2002, Mayor Randy Kelly provided a city guaranty so that bidding of the Como Park Conservatory Restoration and the Visitor Center could go forward.

The Visitor Center at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, developed by architectural firm HGA, opened for education classes in January of 2005 and celebrated its public opening in February 2005. The Visitor Center is 65,000 square feet and features meeting rooms, classrooms, and event spaces, in addition to a large auditorium and the Zobota Cafe. The Visitor Center links to the Como Zoo and Marjorie McNeely Conservatory, serving as the primary entrance to both.

On November 17, 2006, the Tropical Encounters exhibit opened in the Visitor Center. This exhibit is an immersion experience of a Central/South American rainforest and is the first exhibit to feature animals from Como Zoo and plants from the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory. It features turtles, frogs, fish, free-roaming birds, leaf-cutter ants, spiders, an anaconda, and Chloe the Sloth. It also highlights more than 700 plants.

So Minnesota: Moving Museum harks back to Twin Cities’ streetcar heyday!

So Minnesota: Moving Museum harks back to Twin Cities’ streetcar heyday!

The Minnesota Streetcar Museum — an operational trolley on what used to be the Como-Harriet Streetcar line — rolls along the tracks.

KSTP: Long before light rail trains, streetcars rolled through the Twin Cities. The Minnesota Streetcar Museum in Minneapolis honors the history of streetcars by giving people a ride on one.

“One of the things people come out and ask is, ‘Where’s the museum?’” Pat Cosgrove with the Minnesota Streetcar Museum said. “I tap on the side of the car and say, ‘You’re on it.’ Most museums, they yell at you if you touch the artifacts. Not only do you get to touch the artifacts, you get to ride it. So how cool is that?”

Twin City Lines: The 1940’s

Streetcars in the Twin Cities date back more than a century and became most popular in the 1920s.

By 1954 the last streetcar in the Twin Cities shut down.

“Everybody goes out and buys cars, so that was pretty much the end of the streetcar service at that point,” Cosgrove said. “They switched over to buses because it was a lot cheaper to maintain.”

The Minnesota Streetcar Museum was founded about a decade later. It includes one of the last streetcars to operate in the Twin Cities and survive fully intact.

Glensheen Formal Garden Restoration Officially Reopens! – Duluth, MN

Glensheen Gardens

The formal garden is officially reopening to the public for the first time since restoration and reconstruction started. This project has been a long time in the making and couldn’t have happened without the support of so many people, from legislators to construction staff and more.

Our mission at Glensheen is to celebrate preservation, and by completing this critical project while also restoring the gardens to an earlier design & planting plan, we are doing just that.

About

Natural Beauty

The Congdon estate originally included 22 acres of lakeshore property. At the time, the area was heavily wooded and the shoreline was rugged, yet the Congdons saw the potential for a gracious, formal estate and practical home for a busy family with six children.

Historic Glensheen 1905-1930: Photographs from the Congdon Estate’s First 25 Years

Charles Wellford Leavitt, Jr. was a civil and landscape engineer with offices in New York City. As the landscape architect of Glensheen, Charles was directed by the Congdons to preserve as much of the natural beauty of the property as possible. He was also charged with making the estate self-sufficient, which required plans for a large vegetable garden, a greenhouse, an orchard, a cow barn and a water reservoir.

Walk through the formal garden each weekend and take advantage of our extended hours on Saturday and Sunday, when we are open late until 7pm. Grounds admission is only $5 or you can explore the grounds after any tour of the house.
