Minnesota Historical Society: Learn about the early Black communities, free and enslaved, in what would become the state of Minnesota, and about the African Americans newly arriving during the Civil War. Famously, Dred and Harriet Scott lived at Fort Snelling as enslaved people before suing for freedom. After the Civil War, Black regulars of the 25th US Infantry—“Buffalo Soldiers”—were stationed at the fort prior to departing on their nearly 2000-mile bicycle experiment, and many went on to make the Twin Cities home after their service in the Army.

Minnesota Scientific & Natural Areas: Today, a little over 2 percent of that prairie remains. Prairies build soil, clean water, and provide essential habitat. Some of Minnesota’s most unique species of plants and animals call our native prairies home! Many acres of native prairies are protected in MinnesotaSNAs, and still more are protected through conservation easements with the Native Prairie Bank program.

Prairies were once the largest continuous ecosystem in North America, but today they are one of the continent’s most endangered habitats opens in a new browser tab. The near elimination of native prairies and savannas (prairie with scattered trees) has inspired many efforts to protect remaining parcels.

The best way to experience prairie is to get out there and visit one! See, smell, feel and hear native prairies and grasslands at public lands across the state. To get even more involved, volunteer! Then, when you need some down time, explore with your imagination by reading a prairie story or listening to the Prairie Pod.

Learn with our narrated interpreters presenting a robust historical story of our site. Some of the topics covered are the transformation of the Mississippi River, logging and forest management, and early people of the region including native groups as well as early European settlers. Other cultural and environmental history stories of the Northwoods are presented.
