Lake Superior Art Glass: Design Your Own Custom Ice Cream Dish – Duluth, MN

Lake Superior Art Glass

Summer is here and the heat is UP! Design your own custom Ice Cream Dish and watch as our glassblowers create this piece in front of you! Then, when you’re done, pick up a complementary scoop from Love Creamery.

We’ve partnered with Love Creamery to bring you a fun designer event bringing together the two best parts of summer— ice cream and glassblowing! (those are it, right?)

HOW IT WORKS:

  1. Reserve your timeslot online. Please note that each timeslot is for one dish; if you’re looking to design more than one, just reserve another timeslot!
  2. Come see us 10 minutes before your reserved time. This will give you time to choose your colors, designs, and shape!
  3. Watch our talented glassblowers make your dream a reality! Once you decide how you’d like your dish to look, our artists will get to work creating it right before your eyes.
  4. Enjoy a complementary cone from Love Creamery! We’ve partnered with Duluth’s own Love Creamery to give you a free cone for each dish purchased.

History

The Anoka Riverfest™ & Craft Fair originated in 1998 after the success of  Anoka’s 120th anniversary celebration. In 1999, the event was dubbed Anoka Riverfest™ in recognition of the fact that Anoka is the place  where the Rum and Mississippi rivers intersect.

The now annual celebration in historic downtown Anoka took the combined planning efforts of the Anoka Area Chamber of Commerce and many others.

Today, the event attracts more than 15,000 people each July for one day, outdoors, for some outrageous fun.

Anoka Riverfest™ continues to be planned and executed by volunteers. If you’re interested in getting involved, please contact the Anoka Area Chamber of Commerce at 763-421-7130.

Anoka Riverfest™ honors the memories and contributions of long-time event organizer and co-founder, Bonnie Stoll (1949-2008)

Eric Dayton: “North” has gained traction beyond what we ever imagined!

Eric Dayton: “North” has gained traction beyond what we ever imagined!

I recently came across a box of deadstock sweatshirts in an @askovfinlayson storage closet and it brought back old memories. We made these in 2014 to coincide with a panel discussion hosted at the @walkerartcenter and moderated by my friend @poppyharlowcnn. The topic was Minnesota’s identity and the event was originally entitled ‘Midwest’ crossed out, but we had to change it to ‘Midwest?’ because the Walker website couldn’t support strikethrough formatting – perhaps that was a sign.

The evening was a great success with a packed house and inspiring conversation, but I ultimately decided not to sell the merchandise. It was the very early days of Askov and the idea had been to be provocative to create buzz, but I realized that I wanted our brand to be about what it stood for rather than what it was against. And instead of edgy and cool, the message felt negative and critical and that wasn’t us.

Since then, the idea of North has gained traction beyond what we ever imagined way back then. I’m proud that it has become a movement of championing what our state and region have to offer without rejecting anywhere else. And we’ve made optimism and positivity core values of Askov that continue to guide our decisions to this day.

These sweatshirts and plenty of other missteps and false starts will be included in the archive sale we’re co-hosting with our friends @bludot at their Minneapolis outlet store this weekend. If you’re local, stop by for sweet deals on parkas, hats, tees, crews, and more. And, if you end up buying one of these sweatshirts, please just remember to stay positive.
