Fall Color Report on the North Shore and Gunflint Trail

Fall is one of the most captivating seasons on the North Shore and Gunflint Trail. Our deep green forests transform into brilliant fields of red, orange and yellow over the course of a few short weeks. Whether your fall color viewing plan is to go for a hikebike or a scenic fall color drive – we’re here to help guide you toward the best activities.
The MN DNR does a great job of updating their Minnesota Fall Color Map on a regular basis to make planning peak viewing a little easier. Of course, nature does have a mind of her own and can change at any time. Our recommendation is to make a plan but be prepared for things to change.

Generally speaking, “Peak Fall Color” is when both the treetop canopy and the ground below are at their brightest. That typically occurs the last two weekends in September thru the first weekend in October. However, fall color continues to be stunning in different types of forests at different times. The Gunflint Trail‘s peak fall color sometimes doesn’t occur until October and there are pockets of tamaracks on the back roads that do not peak until late October.

Of course, you could always check out our local webcams for a current view. In particular, the 360 degree panoramic web camera at Lutsen Mountains is something to tune into daily.

Don’t forget about the Gunflint Trail!

Many think of the north shore communities as being the top spots for viewing the fall colors. However, it would be a shame to overlook the Gunflint Trail. For over a decade, the fall colors on the Gunflint were minimal due to the Ham Lake fire.  The forest was mainly spruce and pine trees with few deciduous trees like maples, birch and aspen. Now, after years of regrowth and forest evolution, variety has regrown and sprung up all around the Gunflint Trail. Treat yourself to a drive on the 57-mile Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway – who knows, maybe you’ll even spot a Moose too!

An Evening Celebrating the Mississippi River: The River Dreams – Minneapolis, MN

An Evening Celebrating the Mississippi River: The River Dreams – Minneapolis, MN

Join us for the Big River’s biggest night as we celebrate the myriad ways in which the river sparks imagination, catalyzes action and inspires us to dream of a future where its waters run wild and clean. From our historic venue on the Minneapolis riverfront, we’ll savor refreshments and seasonal fare, and enjoy a river-themed auction, live music and interactive learning exhibits.

Program Overview

This year’s festivities will feature the stories of our hopes and dreams for the river, and the work we’re spearheading in pursuit of these dreams. The stories will be told by Friends of the Mississippi River’s own staff and program participants — the people on the front lines of our critical work who daily dream of a brighter future for our river and river communities, and whose imaginations, skill and effort drive those dreams closer to reality.

Check out this preview of our speakers and their dreams for the river, then tell us yours!

La Crescent Apple Festival – La Cresent, MN

La Crescent Apple Festival – La Cresent, MN

La Crescent Apple Festival

The La Crescent Apple Festival is held each year to celebrate the apple industry and the history of this community and will be held Thursday, September 15th thru Sunday, September 17th. The fest grounds are at Abnet Field on the south side of the city. There will be entertainment, a golf tournament, arts and craft show, car show, flea market, and of course, apple pies! There are orchard tours available on Saturday afternoon and the grand finale is the King Apple Parade on Sunday afternoon.

Applefest History

The La Crescent Apple Festival was founded in September 1949 by Ralph Jones and Mel Hickenbotham, with the purpose of promoting La Crescent, its apple industry, and “putting La Crescent on the map”.

The initial planning session was held just two weeks prior to the fest. The first Apple Festival was a huge success, drawing a crowd of nearly 20,000 people and was just a sample of what was to come, as the festivals have grown in size and quality every year.

The Apple Festival was incorporated in 1958 with a seven-member board. It has grown to allow for a maximum board of 42. Each years’ board is listed below.

Apple Festival Inc. is a not-for-profit organization. Board members donate their time and pay their own expenses. All profits made from the festivals are given back to the community for various projects.

The Apple Festival, Inc. was instrumental in the building of the swimming pool and the youth hockey warming house. They have purchased beepers for the fire department, playground equipment, build a tennis court, and other numerous projects.

Famous banquet speakers over the years have included visits by ABC news broadcaster Paul Harvey in 1957 and 1961. In addition to Paul’s visit in 1961, Minnesota Governor Elmer Anderson and Miss USA, Minnesota’s Barbara Peterson also attended.
