Itasca State Park’s Twinkle Light Trail – Itasca, MN

Itasca State Park

Twinkle of starlight, glitter of snow, winter’s frozen crystals reflecting the lights soft glow!

Enjoy the beauty of a winter night along 3/4 mile of lighted trail in Bear Paw Campground.

Available for night (or day) snowshoeing and walking. Lighted with electric twinkle lights from dusk to 10 p.m. daily through the winter snow season. This gentle course follows the Basswood Loop (1/4 mile) and Lakeview Loop (1/2 mile) in Bear Paw Campground.

Wildlife Weathering Our Winter Friends?

As our friends at Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) always say, “YOU are cold. They have fur. It comes down to three main strategies – leave, adapt or slow down.
🦇 Many bird species migrate south for winter, but so do some bats! Eastern red bats, hoary bats and silver-haired bats leave Minnesota in the fall for warmer parts of the U.S. and northern Mexico.
🐺 Other species, like wolves and moose, are well-adapted to winter and actually thrive during this time of year. Wolves group together more in winter and have an easier time hunting prey, like white-tailed deer, that struggle with deep snow and less food. Moose get a much needed break from pesky ticks and warm temperatures, the latter of which is hard on a big-bodied animal.
🐢 For many animals, like turtles, mussels and badgers the key to surviving winter is hunkering down. Most turtles become relatively dormant, moving very little as they lie along the bottom of a pond, lake, stream or river. Mussels will move from shallow water to deeper to avoid freezing, barely moving the rest of the winter. Badgers do not technically hibernate but sleep away most of the winter underground.

Come howl at the Full Wolf Moon during this special snowshoe-after-dark event at the Arb. It’s thought that January’s full moon came to be known as the Wolf Moon because wolves were more likely to be heard howling at this time of the year.

In honor of the Wolf Moon, Bob Ebsen with the Wildlife Science Center will be presenting on his team’s ongoing work with Minnesota gray wolves in the MacMillan Auditorium from 5:30-6:30 pm.

All evening long, a self-guided snowshoe path along Wood Duck Pond will be groomed and lit with tealights for everyone to enjoy. Along the way, warm up around one of the multiple bonfires in the Frog Hollow parking lot and roast a marshmallow.

Also joining us, Pete Miller, owner of The Lakes Running Co and Rick Thompson from Crescent Moon Snowshoes. Pete and Rick will be able to answer all of your snowshoe questions. They will have snowshoes for you to try out as well as some for purchase.

An Authentic Experience

In a world full of manufactured experiences, we have very few opportunities to fully immerse ourselves in authenticity. Glensheen offers one of those rare chances. Come see why Glensheen Mansion, perched on the shore of Lake Superior, is the most visited historic home in Minnesota. Our 12-acre estate features gardens, bridges, and the famous 39-room mansion built with remarkable 20th-century craftsmanship, telling the story of the Duluth region.

Glensheen is gorgeous, inside and out, at this time of year! This afternoon, the M/V James R. Barker passed by the house around 4pm and we were lucky enough to capture it to share with you. With Spirit of the Lights up and running for the evening and the house being transformed for our Candlelight Tour experience, Friday afternoons are a wonderful time to visit.

Mayowood Christmas

Mayowood Christmas Tours continue now thru – December 18th! Ignite your childhood nostalgia for Christmas with our seasonal tours through the beautiful Mayowood Historic Home! Each room is gorgeously decorated, this year with storybook themes from Dr. Seuss to the Polar Express and more. There’s no better way to spark a little holiday spirit than to take a tour through this gorgeous historic location with the halls fully decked out for the season.

Mayowood History

A tour of Mayowood is to experience the personal lives of Dr. Charlie Mayo, co-founder of the Mayo Clinic, and his son, Dr. Chuck Mayo, and gives visitors an opportunity to celebrate their amazing achievements in medicine and human service.

The 23,000-square foot, thirty-eight room home was built in 1910 by Dr. Charlie and Edith Mayo. The home is built of concrete construction, the first of its kind in southeast Minnesota. Once a 3,300-acre country estate, the home has seen many changes over the years.

Indoors, original Mayo family artifacts tell the story of their many world travels and how the home was used as a house of hospitality to entertain the community and VIP celebrity guests.

Outdoors, this home is surrounded by a grand terrace overlooking the Zumbro River along with beautiful botanical gardens and an Oriental Tea House.

In collaboration, the home and property is owned and operated by Mayo Clinic, while the History Center of Olmsted County conducts public tours, special events, and owns much of the original family archival collection.

Today you’re invited to explore Mayowood and immerse yourself in the lives and legacy of the famous Mayo Clinic doctors who helped change the world of medicine.
