North House Folk School: Wool, woodstoves, and winter weave together for a cozy week at North House each February.  Join us on campus for this special week-long gathering that celebrates all manner of fiber arts. Featuring speakers, demonstrations, community gatherings, and coursework from long-time North House instructors as well as new guest artisans; tuck in to the warm and wooly camaraderie this winter. Create your own fiber adventure spinning, knitting, felting, sewing, beading and more!

Fiber Friday, a fabulous feature of Fiber Week, will be February 17th. We’ll host a day of speakers, demonstrations, open studios, and community gatherings free for all enrolled students. Meet your fellow students and instructors, expand your interests and enjoy our cozy campus learning atmosphere. Come early or stay late; you won’t want to miss Fiber Friday!

This year’s Featured Guest Instructor is Leon Ozaawaagosh Valliere, a recognized Elder, Spiritual Leader, and Teacher from Waaswaaganing or Lac du Flambeau in Northern Wisconsin.  He was raised in a traditional Ojibwe hunting and gathering culture.  Ozaawaagosh will offer a course in traditional Anishinaabe Finger Weaving.

Franconia Sculpture Park: Artist Bruna D’Alessandro Sculpture – Shafer, MN

Artist Bruna D’Alessandro recently completed this large-scale portrait of a small acorn that she found at Franconia during her residency this past fall.

The sculpture is created from a flat steel sheet that is cut into shapes and then formed by a meticulous hammering process. The pieces have been then welded together, smoothed and shaped with the help of heat. The acorn is left to rust because the artist appreciates the unstoppable nature of metal, ever changing and responsive to the environment.

Acorns have an essential role in the ecosystems, being eaten by deer, bear, squirrels, birds and many other species. Furthermore, if planted, it leads to the birth of great oaks trees. The sculpture celebrates the preciousness of the seed.

Celebrate the opening of American Swedish Institute’s Fluidity: Identity in Swedish Glass—an exhibit exploring glass as a form of expression by artists on journeys of identity and self—and the U.S. premiere of Swedish glass artist Jo Andersson’s immersive installation, Being. At this special event, hear from Jo Andersson and other featured glass artists, and enjoy themed activities, food and drink inspired by the exhibition.

“Being is a light installation which is intended to help bring individuals into the present moment. I wanted to create a safe space where viewers could lose themselves and fully experience the work as well as their responses to the work. Each Light Vessel is made to be a tool for meditation, personal insight and contemplation. The vessels are handblown and their shapes are inspired by the fluidity of glass creating organic, flowing forms. The vessels are then filled with water to increase their feeling of magnitude as well as intensify their interaction with the light that passes through them. The Light Vessels are meant to be a mirror for the viewer. They allow the individual to lose themselves and go within, into the present moment to meet themselves.” –Jo Andersson

About Jo Andersson

Growing up in the U.S. with Swedish parents who are both entrepreneurs, Andersson chose the creative path. After completing her Bachelor’s, she worked for different artists in Seattle, WA, before moving across the Atlantic. Following her completion of a Master of Arts from Konstfack, Andersson exhibited at, and been represented by, Galleri Duerr in Stockholm. She was awarded the coveted Bernadotte Stipendium in Design in 2021. Jo continues to live in Sweden, where she practices and teaches in the region of Småland.

We’re excited to be back on the ice this winter in South Minneapolis! We look forward to welcoming grown adults and kids of all ages to play / learn / grow / laugh / smile / sing / groove / gather with us in the Art Shanty village.

We’re pleased to reveal the Shanties and the Performances + Art Actions for this season! While we don’t prescribe a theme, this year we’re seeing artists gravitate towards sonic experiences, collective introspection, experiments in sustainability, and movement(s) of both bodies and social agendas. Read all about the projects and check out the performance schedule! More details to come in January, including a village map, amenities, food truck schedule, and more!

Artists had great success with the exterior-only festival in 2022, adapting with whimsical creativity and expanding the notion of what a shanty project can be! (and we did not spread the omicron variant amongst artists or staff members during the surge). With the trajectory of the pandemic still taking twists and turns, and in the spirit of abundant love and caution for our community, we are once again offering an EXTERIOR-ONLY program in 2023 for visitors. Artists have continued to wow us with innovative inside-out designs, and they – along with staff and board members – feel supported in keeping the adaptations this year. This is temporary (we won’t do this forever), and is also the most stable choice for our organization at this time.

It takes a village to build a village, and there are many ways to actively participate! We’ll soon be seeking volunteers for the on-ice program – sign up for our newsletter to get announcements. You can also contribute as a member with an annual donation of just $24 or if you’re a local business, offer a cash or in-kind donation!

Note: Due to rapidly deteriorating ice on Bdé Umáŋ / Lake Harriet, Art Shanty Projects’ annual program will be presented as “Plan Beach” this year instead of ‘On-Ice.” The festival will take place on land along the lakefront, in Bandshell Park, and in the picnic grounds.

We are operating in an urban winter environment where parking is limited. We encourage carpools, biking, walking, skiing, skating and using public transit to get to our event!

Pre-festival event in partnership with Silverwood Park, Melanin in Motion, and Juxtaposition Arts

As a part of Three Rivers’s annual Try it: Ice Fishing event, Saint Paul-based multidisciplinary artist Seitu Jones will invite both experienced and novice ice fishers to ice fish along with him on Silverwood Lake. The artist and artist apprentices from Juxtaposition Arts will demonstrate the process of Gyotaku, a Japanese printmaking technique that anglers have used for hundreds of years to document their catches, and attendees will also be invited to experiment with the unique printmaking process. This event is produced in partnership with Melanin in Motion, who will have a winter Fat Bike demonstration where visitors can take a bike for a spin around the park.

Seitu Jones is a multidisciplinary artist, advocate and maker based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Working between the arts and public spheres, Jones channels the spirit of radical social movements into experiences that foster critical conversations and nurture more just and vibrant communities from the soil up. He is recognized as a dynamic collaborator and a creative force for civic engagement.

Melanin in Motion is a BIPOC movement Movement. Their singular goal is to connect Black people to active living opportunities in the outdoors. They believe that Black bodies in motion are the ultimate expression of FREEDOM. They focus on creating a welcome entry, excitement, positive emotional connections, and removing barriers from point of entry opportunities creating progressive nature-based experiences led by experienced, nurturing BIPOC practitioners with the ultimate goal of building community and connecting people to the joy, fun, and healing of being in nature.

Juxtaposition Arts is a teen-staffed art and design center, gallery, retail shop, and artists’ studio space in North Minneapolis. The organization develops community by engaging and employing young urban artists in hands-on education initiatives that create pathways to self-sufficiency while actualizing creative power.

Nestled along the shores of Silver Lake, Silverwood Park is a unique natural destination devoted to supporting the practice, appreciation and awareness of creative interactions between people and the natural environment. Discover the work of regional artists and poets along park trails and indoor gallery spaces, take part in our educational programming or participate in one of our many unique opportunities for artists and park guests. Only minutes from downtown Minneapolis, Silverwood trails offer spectacular views of Silver Lake, restored prairie and mature oak savanna.
