A Primer: ’90s Fashion For Women

A Primer: ’90s Fashion For Women

This summer’s tastemakers are channeling nostalgia for ’90s fashion for women…

…so we asked five Scouted experts for the 411 on how to modernize these retro trends. As we embrace this fashion revival, it’s time to strap on your jelly sandals, trade in your skinny jeans, and turn up the volume on that Mariah Carey or Pearl Jam tune, as you prove once again—or for the first time—that you’re all that and a bag of chips. Search The Scout Guide directory to find a fashion expert in your area.

A coup for crops

From cardigans and tees to button downs and camis, midriff baring styles have made a comeback, Heather Stefani, owner of blu29 in Asheville, North Carolina, says. Cardigans are one of the most versatile ways to adopt this style, whether worn atop a fitted tee or buttoned up and rocked as a shirt, they work with everything from jeans to dresses for a cute, adaptable look. If you’re adverse to showing your tummy, Victoria DiSilvestro, owner of Airotciv by Victoria in Virginia Beach, Virginia, recommends playing with proportions. “Opt for a cropped style shirt with high-waisted pants, so your midriff doesn’t show.”

Hoop it up

DiSilvestro confirms that hoops, big and small, will remain a style staple this season. This easily executed statement earring has a timeless that makes it especially versatile with every look. She recommends styling hoops with a high neck top, and going dainty with your necklace choice or skipping a necklace all together.

Comfortable denim

Skinny jeans have taken a backseat in favor of denim options that are equal parts comfortable and cool. Catherine Justice, co-owner of Punch Boutique in Roanoke, Virginia, explains that the best thing about shelving those skin-tight styles is the size and shape inclusivity that comes along with 90s-style denim, like a baggy jean or a denim maxi skirt.

The return of jellies

In another nod to ’90s nostalgia, Dallas-based stylist Emily Dawson of Emily by Design, is singing the praises of the return of the jelly sandal. “Comfortable, breezy, minimal, and perfectly chic, I will be styling mine up and down,” she says. “Pair with a strapless silk top and loose-fitting wide-leg jeans for a comfortably cool dinner look, with bermuda shorts and a square neck tank top for Saturday morning errands, and with a blazer and tapered trousers for an unexpected twist.”

Slip into style

Fashion experts across the board agree that slip dresses are undeniably hot right now. “This sleek and simple dress is easily one of our most beloved pieces of the season,” Whitney Eversole, co-owner of Punch Boutique in Roanoke, Virginia, says. Offering modern sophistication with an understated elegance, Eversole notes that designers are reintroducing this staple silhouette in both solid minimalist palettes and fun prints in beautiful fabrics. Endlessly versatile, Dawson recommends styling your slip dress in a multitude of ways. “Wear it under a double-breasted blazer, layered with something more 3D and textural on top, like crochet, sheer organza, or an open eyelet weave,” she says. Combining a slick and shiny fabric with a heavier, tactile weight on top creates contrast and adds interest. “Depending on the look you’re going for, anything from a sneaker, a t-strap flat sandal, or even a pair of stilettos, can pair magically.”

These 6 Nail Colors Are Everywhere This Summer

These 6 Nail Colors Are Everywhere This Summer

“This summer, I predict that nail colors and designs will lean toward bold, vibrant shades and creative, abstract patterns,” says Jin Soon Choi, a runway nail artist with an eponymous nail-care brand and a chain of nail salons in New York City. “It’s all about embracing lively colors and simple, modern designs that are both fun and easy to achieve, making them perfect for the vibrant and carefree summer season.”

HOT ORANGE-RED

In an opaque finish, hot orange-red nails are an eye-catching accent to any ensemble, but a translucent finish emulates the specifically summery hue of a refreshing Aperol spritz. “This bold and energetic color, especially in a translucent finish, is perfect for summer,” Choi says. “It’s a standout shade that can complement both casual and formal looks.”

SHEER ROSE

“A subtle and sophisticated choice, sheer rose offers a natural look with a hint of color,” Choi tells Fashionista. “It’s perfect for those who prefer a more understated elegance.” For those still searching for that ideal balance between a rosy shade and transparent finish, Sterling reveals her hack for achieving the look every time: “I recommend creating sheer colors using your favorite [opaque polish]. You can add clear to any color to create the perfect sheer hue.”

FUCHSIA

“Bright fuchsia is set to be a favorite for those wanting a pop of color,” says Choi. “It’s playful and chic, making it ideal for summer festivities.” The vibrant shade calling back to last summer’s Barbiecore frenzy is also runway-approved, as Choi notes that Jin Soon Flirt was featured on the Helmut Lang Spring 2024 runway.

SUNSHINE YELLOW

Whether it’s a zesty pop of lemon or a butter-y pale yellow, Haye notes that the sunshine-forward shade is destined to be a popular pick this season. Choi adds: “From pastel yellows to more vibrant shades, this color brings a cheerful vibe to any outfit.”

POOL-READY PASTELS

Mint greens, baby blues and lavenders are longtime summer manicure favorites, and the laid-back hues are especially popular for their versatility. As we prepare for sunny picnics and outdoor concerts, pastel nails are conveniently camped out in the forefront of our minds.

MILKY WHITE

No, we’re not talking about Jack’s beloved cow from “Into The Woods.” This barely-there flush of white is a departure from the vibrant hues expected from summer manis, but it’s just as chic. The subtle — and buildable! — wash of (non) color keeps nails light and fresh, making them an ideal addition to any outfit. “Right now, me personally, I’m obsessed with the sheer white,” Sterling says. “So sheer that I mix it with clear myself to get another layer of sheerness.”

Introducing The “Bell Bottom” Bob: This Season’s Breakout Haircut

Introducing The “Bell Bottom” Bob: This Season’s Breakout Haircut

PHOTO: VIA @BRIIDGETBROWN
RF29: Looking for a way to update your bob haircut? Let us introduce you to the “bell bottom” bob, a blunt cut with flicked-up ends inspired by the most-loved trouser silhouette of the ’70s. Much like the nostalgic style of the disco era, the bell bottom bob — coined by hairstylist and trend forecaster Tom Smith — features a curve-caressing, concave shape (albeit here, it hugs the head rather than the body), which finishes in swept-up ends.

What is the “Bell bottom” ?

Over the last year, we’ve seen many iterations of the bob haircut: the bottleneck bob, the baroque bob and the Italian bob to name a few. But if Instagram is anything to go by, the bell bottom bob is set to reign supreme.

“It’s a bob with minimal layers and flipped out at the ends, either with perfect precision or a more undone texture,” says Smith. Editorial hairstylist, educator and founder of RAW Hair, Anthony Nader, adds, “The best way to visually describe this haircut is to think of a pair of cool ‘70s bell bottom denim jeans. Or of course, another definition is the silhouette of a bell.”
While the bell bottom cut is unquestionably chic, its turned-up ends give it a playful edge. It’s already being showcased by a slew of celebrities and influencers, including Gigi HadidBridget BrownInanna and Anok Yai.

How do you style the bell bottom bob?

For anyone already sporting an above-the-shoulders cut, styling your bob into one of the bell bottom variety all comes down to how you heat style your hair post-wash. Starting with damp hair, apply a mousse from roots to ends, comb through and then blowdry with tension and volume, Nader says. When choosing your product, he suggests investing in a firm mousse, as you need to stretch your strands into a new shape. We also suggest going for one with heat protection to save your strands from being singed. Try Pureology Style + Protect Weightless Hair Mousse, or Color Wow Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer.
Next, you’ll want to start sculpting while continuing to use heat from the hairdryer. “When you’re shaping the ends, flip your brush the opposite way so your hair wraps around your brush and flows up and not downwards — this is key to creating the bell,” Nader explains. To achieve this, you’ll want to use a medium-round brush with plenty of bristles, as you need to create the curve all the way to the ends, he says. Try T3 Volume Round Brush.
Smith has a top tip for keeping the shape intact: “If your hair drops out easily, try wrapping the ends up in a small roller while they cool to set the flick in place and finish with a stronghold hairspray,” he says. Try Drybar High Tops Self-Grip Rollers . “For a softer, more daytime look, shake the hair out after styling and add texture spray for a less perfect result.“
If you’re time-poor or finding your arms get tired with too much hair dryer maneuvering, Nader has a trick for you: “Opt for using a [straightener] and iron from the roots down and flick the ends out,” he says. “This way is a no-brainer and will have more staying power as well.”

Which hair types is the bell bottom bob suitable for?

Have full, thick lengths? Then you’re an ideal candidate for the bell bottom bob. “This haircut is waiting for you,” Nader says. “The thickness, especially in the back area, is what highlights the ‘drama’ of that incredible bell flick.”

Those with finer hair can still wear the bell bottom bob, but according to Nader, you’ll need to “put in extra styling work to get the fullness and impact of the flick.” As for hair texture, the style is suitable for most. That said, those with curly or wavy hair will need to blowdry (aka ‘stretch’) “the blessed hair strands that you were born with to create that beautiful [bell] silhouette,” Nader says.

Who best suits the bell bottom bob?

The bell bottom bob is fairly versatile, provided that your hairstylist tailors the cut to your face. “The beauty of this playful retro vibe is that it can be various lengths depending on your face shape,” Nader says. A consultation prior to your haircut will help you land on a style that you love, and most importantly, can maintain easily at home.

Sarah Edwards Fuses Art and Fashion at Martin Patrick 3

While it may seem that a project of this magnitude would take eons to complete, Edwards brought it to life in mere months. Her talent is no secret, yet she hasn’t always been so self-assured about her artwork. “I had been afraid of doing art and fashion myself,” she admits, citing impostor syndrome as her silent critic. But in 2022, she set those doubts aside, diving headfirst into both realms.

Photography by Adam Klosterman

That year, she “started painting and playing around with fashion,” she recalls. What emerged was nothing short of extraordinary: massive acrylic watercolor paintings and sporty-chic jackets.

Edwards’s work soon caught the eye of MP3 co-founders Greg Walsh and Dana Swindler, who enlisted her to create a spring 2024 womenswear line.

And just like that, Edwards leveraged her self-taught fashion and art skills to craft eight pieces for the North Loop mainstay. The pièce de résistance in her eponymous art and fashion label, cheekily dubbed I Am Sarah Edwards? Her distinctive bomber jackets, which feature intricately textured details and eye-catching patterns. “I picture women wearing them leaving a yoga class or with a dress and sneakers,” she says. “They’re really versatile; you can dress ’em up or down.”

Of course, bomber jackets aren’t the only stars of this unique collection. The line also includes standout blazers, dresses and Edwards’s favorite: a chic long vest that can seamlessly transition from the office to the party. And here’s the big twist: Edwards didn’t stop at fashion. She also created visual art to complement each garment — namely, paintings inspired by the colors and textures of each piece, a process she describes as “reinterpreting fabric on canvas.”

Asked what prompted her initial foray into fashion, Edwards says, “A lot of my world is digital, so I’d been dying to work with my hands,” she says. That tracks, as she has long been a social media influencer. Through the years, she’s teamed up with numerous brands — for instance, Jaguar Land Rover. What started with purchasing a car from Jaguar Minneapolis General Manager Ted Terp blossomed into a dynamic partnership, complete with social media collaborations, charity events, speaking gigs and commercial spots — and culminating in the sponsorship for her Martin Patrick 3 fashion collection.

Photography by Adam Klosterman

Tapping into her people skills for her MP3 line, Edwards sought the wisdom of pal and mentor Stephanie Dillon; following her friend’s sustainability advice, she decided to cut fabric waste wherever possible and embraced locally-made, small-batch production. Philosophically opposed to fast fashion, Edwards says that her goal was never to be trendy but to create timeless pieces people will cherish for the long haul.

Edwards’s admiration for female friends, mentors and other creatives didn’t stop with Dillon: Every piece in her collection is named after a woman who has inspired her. “It’s been fun,” she says of this brand signature, noting that she just sold a piece entitled “Mom.” (“She was, like, ‘Do I get a commission on this?’” Edwards jokes.)

Photography by Adam Klosterman

At the swanky launch event for Edwards’s MP3 collection — which launched in early May — her dedication to uplifting women shone through. She recruited a diverse cast of models, whom she describes as “movers and shakers” in the Twin Cities. “They’re all really cool, entrepreneurial, influential and impact-driven women,” she says. Corresponding paintings were used as backgrounds as the models strutted down the runway dressed in her colorful creations.

Edwards’s stellar show felt like the perfect culmination of her artistic growth: a journey from propelling other creatives to the forefront to taking center stage herself. For her, it’s about more than just sharing her art; it’s about fostering genuine connections within the Minnesota community. “Realizing that I created these here in Minneapolis, with people here in Minneapolis, feels really, really good.”
