Como Conservatory: Fall Flower Show’s Sunken Gardens Opens

While many Minnesota gardens are winding down for the winter season, the Sunken Garden at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory will be in full bloom! Opened in October for the 108th Annual Fall Flower Show. The first half of the Fall Show’s inspiration this year is drawn from an underwater environment. Usual ‘spider’ and anemone mums in pink and white pastel colors will be accompanied by large and small succulents plants. There will be green sting ray colcassia, pink, purple and white scabiosa plants, and blue echinops.

The Sunken Garden reopens early November for the second half of the Fall Flower Show which will run through November 26th. The second half of the Fall Show will be a celebration of the Dia de los Muertos. Orange and yellow mums will be accented by bright magenta celosia as well as orange marigolds and multicolored osteospermum.

Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is part pumpkin patch and part art installation. From the trees to the ground, guests can marvel at carved pumpkins of all shapes and sizes as they wander through a naturally magical autumn trail at the Minnesota Zoo.

With a brand-new theme that will take you through the beauty of the four seasons and all new designs, discover a rotating selection of expertly carved pumpkins crafted in the likeness of people, places, and animals from around the world.

Voted as Minnesota’s Best Day Trip and Family Attraction, the Minnesota Zoo is a must-see destination this fall, with Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular providing a unique way to connect with nature and celebrate the splendor of autumn nights in Minnesota.

Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is open each night now through November 4th.

Advanced online tickets are required.

Tickets are timed and must be purchased at mnzoo.org.

Adult: $24.00

Child: (3-12yrs)

Senior: (65+) $20.00

During this special evening Zoo event, all activities will be at ground level; access to the Treetop Trail will not be available as part of this year’s Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular. The Treetop Trail will be open during normal, daytime Zoo hours.

The William A. Irvin has been transforming into the Haunted Ship each October for nearly 30 years. Brave visitors can experience a real scare by taking a self-guided tour through the once historic ore ship that has been flipped inside out to reveal its true identity. The haunting of the Irvin is not just a rumor, as mysterious and paranormal sightings have been recorded throughout history.

This year, the Haunted Ship crew was inspired to create several new areas, while refreshing props in every room for a new fever dream of a tour. This year’s waking nightmare includes a sinking German U-boat with water flooding in, a narrow escape through catacombs and an abandoned castle with tension at every turn, a vortex delivery to a Victorian parlor and library, and even more thrilling elements.

Starting in the engine room you will travel through the ship until you land in your final destination that is below the freezing waters of Lake Superior in the maze of terror. If you thought the rest of the ship was terrifying, just wait until you step down into the maze. While down in the pitch dark “dungeon” of the ship, not knowing where you’re going is the least of your worries. Watch your back; you never know who’ll be hovering over your shoulder.

Stillwater Harvest Fest, held the second weekend of October each year, is one of the premier events in downtown Stillwater and one of the largest of its kind in the Midwest. Several times, Stillwater Harvest Fest was the number one giant pumpkin weigh off in the world. That is determined by the combined weight of the Top 10 pumpkins brought to the scale. In 2010 we had a World Record pumpkin.

Fall pumpkin season begins late September and goes through the end of October.  We have mini pumpkins, pie pumpkins, and pumpkins perfect for carving of all shapes, sizes, textures and colors!  We also have gourds, several varieties of squash, sweet corn and many more fall favorites!

Our retail store is filled with frozen unbaked pies and crisps, jams, fresh local honey, baking supplies, gifts and much more!  Inside our retail store is our Cafe’ ala Apple that serves up fresh apple cider, donuts, fritters, hot dogs, cider brats, blended frappes, and other fall time favorites.  Our strawberry shakes are amazing!
