This concert features Antonio Vivaldi’s original “Four Seasons”, a collection of four violin concertos first composed 300 years ago, each movement named for one of the four seasons of the year. Seeking for the Lost
…

Seeking for the Lost views the details of often overlooked histories with an artistic lens.

…

Featuring portraiture by contemporary artist Christopher E. Harrison, this exhibition explores the unbreakable familial bonds expressed through ads in the St. Paul newspaper The Appeal; presents the post-Reconstruction goals of Minnesota’s Black press; and shows how literacy informed the lives of Black Americans after the Civil War.

Organized by the African American Interpretive Center of Minnesota and curated by JoJo Bell, the exhibition elucidates the eponymous “Seeking for the Lost” column from The Appeal, a Black-owned and operated St. Paul newspaper. The column printed ads from those seeking family members who had been sold or “lost” during slavery and through the post-Reconstruction period. Informally, small ads started appearing in the paper in 1888, and in 1891 The Appeal published the ads as a permanent column. The Appeal was not the first paper to print such ads, but in this newspaper the ads were free, signaling its significant commitment to help readers find family at no cost as well as its resolve to uplift a new post-Reconstruction generation desperate to reconnect with loved ones lost to slavery.

Each painting by Christopher Harrison in the exhibition imagines what a missing subject described in “Seeking for the Lost” might have looked like. By portraying each lost family member with a distinct perspective and personality, Harrison’s art emphasizes kinship as a unifying power and literacy as a means of endurance.

About 10th Wave

10th Wave is a 501c(3) musician-led ensemble that collaborates with living, local and/or underrepresented artists to perform high quality programming and connect with the Minneapolis-St. Paul community.

10th Wave believes music has the ability to create a shared experience; therefore, they are always searching for new opportunities to present programmatic concerts and perform in casual public spaces where high quality art music is welcome. Formed in December 2017, 10th Wave is a collective instrumental music ensemble of conservatory-trained professional musicians including but not limited to: flute, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, piano, percussion, and voice. Pieces performed by 10th Wave are all composed within the last century in the classical music genre and can be categorized as modern, postmodern, electronic, indie-classical, and contemporary. 10th Wave also performs commissions and pieces written by living & local composers in Minnesota.

Quilt National ’23 Exhibit

…

The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County is pleased to announce the opening of Quilt National ’23, a juried exhibit of 30 one-of-a-kind quilted masterpieces.

…

The Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, OH, has organized this biennial competition for 45 years. Commenting on the innovation and diversity of Quilt National, Leah Magyary, Executive Director of The Dairy Barn Arts Center, says, “Throughout its history, Quilt National has showcased quilts that play with light, space, color, and technology, allowing new masterpieces to emerge and blossom. And we are not done yet- there is so much more for the quilting world to discover, and the more artists we invite to the table, the better we can progress towards untapped creativity.”

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from Lake Region Arts Council, thanks to a Minnesota State Legislative appropriation; Minnesota Quilters; The Arts Partnership with the Cities of Fargo, Moorhead, and West Fargo; the Fargo-Moorhead Area Foundation, and the Alex Stern Family Foundation, and by a generous donation from Joe and Muriel Richardson.
