Did you know the Arboretum taps more than 350 trees every winter? Learn more about our trees and the maple tapping process at several interpretive stops at Frog Hollow Workshop and the Maple Sugar House including sugar maple tree tapping demos and tree identification. Visitors will watch Arboretum staff cook down the sap to make pure maple syrup. Afterward, warm up in the Eatery (open from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.), offering a variety of maple-themed items for purchase.

Wood Week explores the many ways wood can be shaped into useful, beautiful and satisfying objects. Each course offering dives deep into a particular form or tool, but a shared interest in what can be made from trees links everyone who joins in on the fun. This year we feature two guest instructors— Julia Kalthoff and Mark Gardner as well as a host of talented North House “regulars.”
We are pleased to welcome special guest Julia Kalthoff of Stockholm, Sweden. Julia is passionate about axes- and her passion is contagious! After learning her trade at renowned Swedish companies Gränfors Bruk and Wetterlings, Julia has started her own small company Kalthoff axes, producing high quality axes at a small scale. She will teach two classes and demonstrate during the Carvers’ Conference.
This will be Mark Gardner‘s first trip to North House. Mark is a well-respected wood turner who will explore a very traditional form- the shrink box- on the lathe. Mark will give a featured demonstration on Friday, March 17th on small handled wooden bowls.
Friday, March 15th will be the Carver’s Conference, a day full of demonstrations, workshops, skill shares, and community gatherings. All enrolled students are encouraged to come early or stay late to partake of this extra benefit.
