From the Lakewood 2025 calendar. Photographer Hannah Rupert captured our April photo, proving that April showers bring . . . rainbows over our historic Memorial Chapel. Completed in 1910, the chapel is a priceless architectural treasure and one of the most perfect examples of Byzantine mosaic art in the United States. You can read more in our free 2025 Lakewood calendar, available at our Welcome Center, open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

10th Annual Lantern Lighting Celebration at Lakewood Cemetery

Lanterns Decorated to Remember Loved Ones Create a Breathtaking Moment of Serenity, Commemoration and Connection!

Lakewood Cemetery invites the public to its 10th Annual Lantern Lighting Celebration. Th3 weekend event offers an opportunity for people to remember loved ones and celebrate their lives by decorating then releasing floating, candlelit lanterns onto Lakewood’s Jo Pond.

At the event, people can decorate a paper lantern sleeve with favorite pictures, messages and personal sayings, poems and other symbols of remembrance. At dusk, in a beautiful ceremony, attendees gather to release their lanterns onto Lakewood’s ten-acre lake, as the names of loved ones are read aloud accompanied by the stirring sound of bagpipes. The effect of the candlelit lanterns floating on the lake is breathtaking and magical, connecting people to their loved ones and to others who are remembering and grieving.

Throughout the event, guests can enjoy live music, food and refreshments from local food trucks, and the beauty of Lakewood’s scenic grounds. Self-guided tour brochures of the cemetery will also be available.

 Midsummer Memory Mandalas Event

A Special Weekend That Includes a Public Art Installation and Hands-on Workshops to Transform Grief into Beauty Through Creative Expression!
Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis will once again welcome acclaimed earth artist Day Schildkret (@morningaltars) for its 4th Annual Midsummer Memory Mandalas event — an art installation and hands-on workshops designed to honor the impermanence of life and transform grief into beauty. Join us for this moving weekend of art, nature, and reflection.

Explore the beauty that can be found through grief and loss as Day uses foraged natural materials like rocks, seeds, and flowers gathered from Lakewood’s sacred grounds to create a brilliant and bright one-of-a-kind artwork. Through the very impermanence of these natural materials, this earth-art beautifully mimics the impermanence of life as it slowly returns to the grounds from which it was sourced. This healing process allows us to reflect on life, loss, and the beauty that can be found throughout this journey.

About

Meet the artist, listen to his story and watch the giant memory mandala take its final shape. Day will share his 7-step Morning Altars practice of creating impermanent earth altars made from nature, while exploring the importance of ritual in honoring life’s transition.

Lakewood’s 250 acres are filled with memorial markers, structures and sculptures built to pass the test of time. On Saturday, July 16, we will welcome a very different kind of creation. Artist Day Schildkret will use natural materials he has gathered from the cemetery and its surroundings over the course of several days to create a large-scale tribute to love and loss, using a hands-on practice that combines mindfulness, creative expression and connection with nature.

Lakewood Cemetery

Since 1871, Lakewood’s 250 acres of urban memorial parkland have served as a community gathering place and a chronicle of our history. Today, Lakewood is making memorialization more relevant, accessible and inviting for new audiences and generations.

Take a walk around the tree covered, grassy area that stretches from the Living Memory Tree to the Garden Mausoleum (near the Walker family Monument) and check out the earth art gallery on the grounds!
These vibrant mandalas were created by workshop participants who learned the Morning Altars 7 step process from visiting artist and instructor Day Schildkret (Morning Altars). The impermanent pieces may not be here for long, so be sure to visit soon!
