Minneapolis’ Favorite Rooster is Ready for the Winter!

Every fall, the “Hahn/Cock” is winterized. Due to its stainless-steel skeleton, the sculpture can store water under its blue exterior. When frozen, that water can expand up to 10%, which places the 25-foot-tall Katharina Fritsch piece at risk of cracking.

To combat this, the blue rooster is finished with “weep holes” that allow for drainage. This week, a member of the Walker’s collection team climbed into the belly to unplug debris that has gotten stuck, preparing it for the long, Minnesotan winter ahead.
