CELEBRITY STYLE: Like it or not, 2000s fashion is back with a vengeance. The Y2K aesthetic is being embraced in many different forms: Juicy Couture sweatsuits are back from the dead, TikTok stars are favoring low-rise jeans, and models like Bella Hadid are wearing mesh tops, too. And now, Miley Cyrus is making the case for the return of a popular—and polarizing—accessory from the decade: trucker hats.
Trucker hats—a regular baseball cap with a foam crown and screened back—were a hit in the early-aughts. Stars like Lindsay Lohan, Ashton Kutcher, Rihanna, and Gwen Stefani would rock their best trucker hats on the red carpet, often by Von Dutch, the brand that ignited the trend. Twenty years later, Cyrus has posted her more current take on the look. She styled her trucker hat with distressed jeans, a sleeveless tee, and MSCHF x Lil Nas X’s Satan Sneakers (released today, they feature a drop of human blood in the soles).
Cyrus’s trucker hat says “Go ahead punk, make my day,” which is a quote referencing the film series Dirty Harry, starring Clint Eastwood. In fact her whole look—not to mention the beat-up Land Rover she’s sitting on—seems to be channelling the rough-and-tumble flick, with some modern touches. So, consider the trucker hat comeback less of a serious fashion statement, and more of a cheeky—if not costumey—accessory to play into a fashion theme. Cyrus’s spring theme? It’s obviously “gritty action star with a penchant for 2000s style.”
