The Rake’s Progress

The story concerns the decline and fall of Tom Rakewell

Opera director Omer Ben Seadia and music director Christian Reif lead an all-star cast in an exquisite production of Igor Stravinsky’s delightfully clever opera, The Rake’s Progress. The story concerns the decline and fall of Tom Rakewell, who deserts his rural country town and girlfriend Anne Trulove for the delights of London. Being seduced by greed and fame under the spell of his devilish companion, Nick Shadow, Tom meets his moral, mental, and physical demise. The closing moral of the tale is: “For idle hearts and hands and minds the Devil finds work to do.”

Sung in Italian with English supertitles.

Gull Lake Frozen Fore Winter Weekend – Brainerd, MN

Gull Lake Frozen Fore Winter Weekend – Brainerd, MN

About

The Gull Lake Frozen Fore Winter Weekend takes place in the Brainerd Lakes Area each February. This three-day celebration of all things winter, brings together a weekend of activities and fun for adults. From snow golfing to dancing on a frozen lake, this winter weekend is unlike any other.

Friday night begins with the annual Frozen Flop, our version of the polar plunge, which raises money for local charities. Not only does the Frozen Flop occur in the middle of Hole-in-the-Day bay, but also under a heated tent. Unlike any other flop, spectators stay warm, and floppers keep out of the wind making it a truly unique event. Following the flop, is our heated Tent Party! Showcasing an ice bar, food and live music, the Tent Party is a super way to kick off the evening.

Saturday morning begins with a Pancake Feed on the ice to get you ready for the day. Following the feed, Snow Golf begins. Here you can jump on provided shuttles, or drive your snowmobiles, and play nine holes of winter golf at nine different locations around the Gull Lake. We provide the golf club and a fresh supply of tennis balls so all you have to do is venture around the lake and try getting a point at each location. The diversity of each “golf” hole variety keeps the day entertaining. A Digital Scavenger Hunt also takes place throughout the day so keep that phone charged up. If you get a picture at each given location you will be entered to win 4 free tickets to the following Frozen Fore Winter Weekend. In the evening, the Saturday night Tent Party kicks off again with hours of great music under the heated tent. Stayed tuned for more Saturday activities, we are always adding more.

Finishing the Frozen Fore weekend is Sunday’s Food Fest. This cook-off features a variety of local restaurants showcasing their flavors in a taste competition for the best flavors in the area. Enter the heated tent at Hole-in-the-day Bay and take in the aromas of the Brainerd Lakes Area’s finest restaurants. Vote for your favorite after you’ve sampled them all and get ready for to hear the judges announce the winner.

Proceeds of the Frozen Fore Winter Weekend event are donated to Confidence Learning Center and Kids Against Hunger – Brainerd Lakes Area. Come support the kids! If you’re interested in participating in this fun and charitable event you can buy tickets online or at any of the sponsoring locations.

Paul Bunyan Land: If you spent your childhood in Minnesota, chances are you’ve been to at least some of its amusement parks. Valley Fair is the largest and most modern, with its high-flying towers and lightning-fast roller coasters. But there are some other, more low-key amusement park destinations that have stood the test of time for far longer. One favorite, which has been delighting generations of Minnesotans since 1950, is Paul Bunyan Land. This northern Minnesota attraction, themed after Minnesota’s favorite tall-tale hero, is a nostalgic spot that takes older generations back in time and provides newer generations with old-timey thrills. Read on below to learn about this Minnesota landmark!
Paul Bunyan Land is an amusement park in Brainerd, Minnesota. It covers 180 acres, making it one of the largest parks of its kind in northern Minnesota. Many guests travel from miles around to visit.

Have you ever been to Paul Bunyan Land? What’s your favorite memory of visiting? For more information about the park, check out their website and Facebook page.
