Solar Big Year — 2024 Eclipse – St. Paul, MN

Solar Big Year — 2024 Eclipse – St. Paul, MN

Join us at the Bell for a special open Monday to celebrate Minnesota’s partial view of the eclipse. The eclipse will be at its peak at about 2:00 pm, and we’ll see about 75% coverage here in Minnesota. Throughout the day, we’ll have a plethora of solar focused activities, a livestream of the eclipse, a new eclipse flipbook pattern, and expert astronomy staff to answer all of your solar questions!

Please note: we’re unable to control the clouds — if the weather is poor on the day of the eclipse, we’ll still have a day of sun-focused activities!

This is a public event and we are not accepting group visits for our eclipse programming.  We will not be able to accommodate buses, and do not have the infrastructure and staffing to support group needs on this day.

Portraits of the Plots

Don Luce presents a series of paintings that capture the character of the individual test plots that make up Cedar Creek’s Big Biodiversity (Big Bio) experiment. Begun in the 1990s, Big Bio depends upon a grid of test plots that are monitored to determine the relationship between species diversity and productivity. The project has demonstrated that biodiversity is important for the productivity and stability of living systems.

The paintings were made in a process that mimicked the growth of the plots, starting from a sand colored base, with details of the plants layered on top. The paintings were conceived as portraits offering an intimate perspective into the character, diversity, and abundance of the experiment’s test plots while also giving viewers a window into the significance of the Big Bio experiment, one of the first studies to quantitatively demonstrate the importance of protecting our Earth’s amazing biological diversity.

Don Luce smiling directly at cameraDon Luce holds a degree in Zoology and a master’s degree in Medical and Biological Illustration from the University of Michigan. For over 40 years, he drew on his interest in science, art and nature to develop exhibitions at the University of Minnesota’s Bell Museum, before retiring in 2021.

Don is also an illustrator and artist. His paintings have been featured in one-person exhibitions at the Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth, MN and the Peter White Library in Marquette, Michigan. A retrospective exhibition of his art and illustrations, A View from a Canoe, showed at the Bell Museum in fall 2016. He has been an artist-in-residence at Joshua Tree National Park and, most recently, Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve.

New moon nights – night when the moon is absent from the sky – make for great stargazing!

Here’s a great way to start – look due north after the sun has set and find the Big Dipper constellation (above) with its telltale 3-star handle and 4-star dipper. In the winter, the dipper is at ‘3-o’clock’ with the handle hanging down.

Gaia

Join us for Gaia, a touring installation by UK artist Luke Jerram, Now through – August 14th.

Gaia is an internally-lit sculpture of the Earth featuring imagery from NASA’s Visible Earth project. At 23 feet in diameter, it presents the Earth at a scale 1.8 million times smaller than its real size. The work includes a surround sound composition by BAFTA award-winning composer Dan Jones.

The installation evokes the overview effect, a shift in awareness experienced by some astronauts during space flight. It’s an experience of awe, interconnection, and renewed responsibility to care for the planet.

About The Artist

A Natural Curiosity: The Story of the Bell Museum – Book Launch Event

A Natural Curiosity: The Story of the Bell Museum – Book Launch Event

Bell Museum

Cranes with text that reads: A Natural Curiosity The Story of the Bell MuseumSince its humble start in 1872 as a one-room cabinet of curiosities, the University of Minnesota’s Bell Museum of natural history has become one of the state’s most important cultural institutions. From its conception as part of a state-mandated geological and natural history survey, to its most recent ventures into technology, environmental science, and DNA sequencing, the Bell Museum has informed, explained, and expanded our relationship to the natural world. Drawing on a wealth of materials unearthed during the museum’s recent move, the gorgeously illustrated book, A Natural Curiosity, chronicles the remarkable discoveries and personalities that have made the Bell Museum what it is today.

Join us for a special evening book launch event featuring brief presentations by the book’s co-authors Barbara Coffin and Don Luce, followed by a moderated conversation with Coffin and Luce, hosted by the Bell Museum’s Science Director Dr. George Weiblen, also a contributing author to the book. They will be joined in conversation by lead writer and co-author Lansing Shepard and co-author Gwen Schagrin as well as contributing author Sally Brummel.

The book can be ordered online or purchased at the Bell Museum’s Curiosity Shop.

The event is open to the public via Zoom. Please register through Eventbrite. Attendees will receive a link two days prior to the event.
