Meet Cassie Fehlen, the Skincare Expert Behind Skin MPLS Studio

The world of skincare and aesthetics is simultaneously enticing and intimidating.

Artful Living: Promises of a glowing and flawless complexion reel us in, but navigating a seemingly endless march of new products and cutting-edge treatments can be paralyzing. So, how do we know which creams or lasers will actually get us results? Ask an expert, of course. We recently sat down with Skin MPLS founder Cassie Fehlen to get her insights on all things aesthetics, including skincare trends, functional facials and ways to love your skin.

How did you get started in the skincare world?

It all began because my mom always took fantastic care of her skin and encouraged me to start a few-step skincare regimen at a young age. Having begun so early, it was just a part of life that was baked into me. Throughout my teenage years and into my twenties, friends would seek my advice on their skin and other beauty products, but getting into the beauty industry never occurred to me. Instead, I majored in business at a four-year college because I thought that’s what you did. After several years of working as an IT consultant in the corporate world, I found myself discontented and yearning to help people more directly in both my career and daily work. And who is the one person that you tell everything to? You know, your hairstylist! I had apparently poured my heart out to her over the years, and she helped guide me straight to aesthetics. I never looked back!

What’s the philosophy behind Skin MPLS?

It stems from my time working as a consultant — we are problem solvers, skin problem solvers! We want to be your skin consultant so you can focus on the rest of your life and the things that really matter to you. Daily life is packed; there isn’t time for you to also be a skin researcher and expert. Working with a professional who can easily guide you to the right products and treatments for your skin shortcuts you straight to skin results. We see the self-confidence boost that an improved and clear complexion brings, so we want to bring that to as many people as possible.

What sets Skin MPLS apart from other spas?

When we opened in 2013, we were the only skin clinic in the Twin Cities to specialize in treating acne. We love to treat acne! Nearly every adolescent will encounter acne in their teens, and so many women deal with acne in their twenties, thirties, forties and beyond. It’s baffling to me that there aren’t better resources readily available to help people with acne, so I dug in before opening and figured it out.

The impact of clearing a client’s acne drives us to continue doing our jobs enthusiastically. I’m proud of the work we do and the added bonus is that it attracts top aestheticians who care about our clients and industry, and consider aesthetics to be their career. You can see any of our providers and know you’re with a top skin expert.

Which trends are you excited about right now?

I’ve always been a fan of at-home skincare devices and tools when used responsibly! They used to be few and far between. But now, they seem to pop up daily, which makes it hard to decipher what is worth it and what is not. I love researching, trying some of them out and helping others decide what trendy device may be worth incorporating into their skincare routine.

Any trends to avoid?

I hate to be too negative, but avoid all skincare trends! Be cautious and discerning. You don’t need to be an early adopter to get your best skin. Even as new professional equipment, products, protocols and treatments come out, I like to wait and let others be test subjects first to weed out learnings. No need for me or my clients to take on unnecessary risk or try something expensive just to find the results underwhelming!

Skincare seems to be inundating everyone right now, which is exciting for our field and creates interest. However, every company in every industry is trying to get a piece, which can dilute results because not every company should be making skincare products, devices and tools.

Can you tell us about functional facial treatments?

We like the word “functional” because it’s a bit of a double entendre, meaning to have purpose and to treat holistically. With our consultative approach to skin, we make sure our facial treatments function to achieve your skin goals and treat your concerns. And, holistically, we consider more than just your face when we’re helping you through your skin issues. We investigate and thoughtfully dig into your health and lifestyle to uncover any hurdles that may be thwarting your skin goals.

Why is it important to seek a professional to create an at-home routine?

Ultimately, it will get you the results you’re looking to achieve. Though products from a professional can seem expensive up front, they will save you time, frustration and money. Skincare products and ingredients are confusing. What works for your friend’s skin won’t work for your skin. We know skin and can tell you what will work for your skin to get the results you’re after.

What are the best ways to enhance skincare results?

Med spa treatments give some noticeable and relatively quick skin results. They are an excellent place to start if you’re new to skincare and have lofty goals and a short timeline. Otherwise, they beautifully support and boost results in already improved skin. Broadband Light (BBL) laser treatments can shift pigment in skin that you didn’t notice was there until it’s gone. The light targets the red and brown pigment in the skin to create a very even canvas.

BBL, medical-grade microneedling and deeper chemical peels can all pack a punch for skin change. But med spa treatments can take a chunk of your skincare budget, so we use them wisely for those with stricter budgets. At Med Spa @ Skin MPLS, we believe your neck and your décolleté are as important as your face, so we include those areas (as time allows) in the price of your treatment.

Which treatment do you recommend most?

Nothing is one-size-fits-all, but medical-grade microneedling is as close as possible. There are very few contraindications, and we thoroughly review your health history and get any necessary clarifications before moving forward. This unicorn of a treatment is FDA-approved to treat acne scarring and wrinkles, but it has also been seen to improve overall skin health, including redness, pigmentation, dullness, laxity, collagen creation and pore appearance. There is one day of downtime, and for most people it’s pretty minimal considering the skin improvement.

The days of the messy bun are finally over, ushering in the era of the effortlessly elegant low bun.

BEAUTY: You heard it here first: the low bun is making a comeback in 2024. Although the high messy bun has reigned among the top bun hairstyles for women for years, our favorite celebrities and style icons have proved that the low bun hairstyle is emerging this year as one of the trendiest looks of the season.

At the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Selena Gomez strode down the red carpet sporting the ultimate croisette-core look, which she finished off with a slicked-back low bun and a few statement clips.

Whether you associate the low bun with lazy day hair looks or elegant old Hollywood movie stars of the past, we’re here to put you on to a few of the best bun hairstyles for women. Join L’OFFICIEL as we explore all the ways to style a low bun, whether you’re searching for an ultra-sleek ballerina-style bun or an effortlessly chic messy variant on the look.

Messy Low Bun

If you have bangs, opt for the messy low bun as your go-to. Instead of slicking your curtain bangs or ultra-chic French girl bangs back, let them shine in one of the most effortless-looking bun hairstyles for women. Luckily, this low bun hairstyle also happens to be one of the most fuss-free options, so all you truly need is five minutes in front of a mirror and a hair tie of choice, and you’re all set. To achieve the Taylor Swift low bun look, be sure not to tie your bun too tight and pull a few loose strands out for the artfully tousled look favored by the pop star.

Slicked Back Low Bun

Take it from the queen of slicked-back hair looks and the ultimate It girl, the slicked-back low bun is a hairstyle you’ll want to return to time and time again after giving it a shot. Whether you opt to go for a clean girl look à la Hailey Bieber or go more grungy with your beauty look, this low bun look is wildly versatile and one of the easiest bun hairstyles for women to achieve. Grab a comb, your hair gel of choice, and a hair wax stick—perfect for dealing with flyaways or layers that won’t stay down no matter what—part your hair, and pull your hair into a low bun.

While it’s incredibly trendy at the moment, it’s also the perfect hairstyle for providing the illusion of time and effort spent on your hair—ideal for those days when you just don’t feel like pulling out all the stops.

Retro-Style Low Bun

For your next cocktail party or more formal event, let your hair have a moment as the star of the show with a retro-inspired low bun look. This ’60s-inspired hairstyle adds a touch of elegance reminiscent of Hollywood movie star glamour that works to elevate any look.

Although this is among the bun hairstyles for women that require a bit more work, you’ll be glad to put in the time once you’re swimming in compliments at your event. Begin by brushing all of your hair out of your face and separating your hair into two adjacent ponytails. Then, wrap both ponytails into a spiral and secure them in a bun with a few of your favorite bobby pins. Be sure to finish off your look and apply mousse or hairspray to secure your hairstyle.

Low Bun for Short Hair

If you’re a short hair girly, don’t fret—the low bun trend is for everyone. Whether you opt to slick your hair back like Charlize Theron—who proved at the 2024 Academy Awards that even the shortest bobs can be transformed into the low bun of your dreams—or leave a few face-framing strands out in the front, all you truly need to do with this look is brush your hair back and secure it in a hair tie, making it one of the easiest bun hairstyles for women.

While you may not have the full, voluminous look that someone with longer locks may sport, the looped low bun is a playful, fun way to switch up your hair from time to time.

Wet Hair Low Bun

Adjacent to the slicked-back bun, the wet hair low bun has taken over the runways and the red carpet alike, and made headlines recently after Zendaya donned the hairstyle to a flashy red carpet premiere of Dune Part 2. Grab plenty of your favorite hair gel and pull your hair back into a messy low bun to achieve the effortlessly artful hairstyle. Unlike a classic slick-back, neatness is not the priority, so feel free to pull out a few gel-laden strands to emphasize the full wet hair effect.

Spiky Low Bun

The recent ’90s and Y2K craze has left Gen-Z obsessed with the spiky bun, and Emily Ratajkowski made a statement on the 2024 Met Gala red carpet with this low bun that tiptoes the line between edgy and elegant. For women with layers, this look couldn’t be easier to achieve. After you’ve pulled your hair back into a low bun, pull out a few short strands and apply gel or hair wax to get that structured look, and you’ll be ready to sport the ultimate cool girl hairstyle of the early aughts.

Holiday Makeup Inspiration Straight From the Fall/Winter 2021 Runways

Holiday Makeup Inspiration Straight From the Fall/Winter 2021 Runways

Off-White’s Pop Of Color – Off-White Fall/Winter 2021

On the Off-White runway, there were many variations on this daring look. A pop of color accents the inner or outer corner. Try a seasonal red, blue, gold, or green to really match the holiday aesthetic. Pick a pigmented shade to go loud, or a more subtle color to create a pleasant wash.

This season is all about the bold, festive eyes.

BEAUTY: A truly exquisite holiday outfit requires an equally fanciful makeup look. To have one without the other would be like sipping hot cocoa without a plentiful helping of marshmallows. Don’t fret if you are having trouble coming up with something spectacular, we have all the necessary makeup inspiration straight from the fall runways.

Patron saint of beauty Pat McGrath makes an appearance, as do Euphoria-esque faces. Last season, makeup was all about the eyes, making them pop as much as possible. It was to be expected in a mask-wearing world. This holiday season, the masks are still around, though you might be able to sneak a bold lip into a small gathering. Still, one can’t go wrong with bold liner.

Jonathan Cohen’s All Over Color

For Jonathan Cohen, an all over eye color was employed. Here, the model is wearing a bright fuscia, but more seasonal shades can be swapped in to match the mood, or your outfit. Opt for a creme shadow for this glossy look, or stick to pressed pigments for a matte finish

Prada’s Mixed Palette

Prada brought in legendary artist Pat McGrath to make the case for mismatched eyes last fall. Here, she chose to alternate silver and gold to create a hard, metal look. Try out this trend with some glitters for a less imposing effect, or go even brighter with neon shadows.

Christian Cowan’s Bejeweled Eyes

At Christian Cowan, pastel and rhinestones were the move. Due to the popularity of the show, this sort of look will always be known as “Euphoria makeup,” but the basic elements have been used for decades. For this style, more is always more. Diamonds, pearls, and pastels are your golden ticket.

Anna Sui’s Mod Liner

Anna Sui opted for this retro-inspired look on their runway. Sixties’ mod makeup is back in a big way, likely due to the boldness of its aesthetic. Here, the model can be seen with a green over-the-eye line. Add in a few lash lines on your lower lid to really evoke the mod style.

Victoria Beckham’s Bedroom Eyes

For Victoria Beckham’s lookbook, the brand took smudged liner and the live-in look to its classiest iteration. Subtly smudged liner and a natural palette are perfect for a nighttime party, or early morning bash with last night’s mascara. Bold bangs are optional.

Alice + Olivia’s Smoky Eye

At Alice + Olivia, it was all about the smoky look. While this trend may not be for the family get-together, the bold party-goer will make it work this holiday season. A mix of charcoal liner and your darkest shadow should get the job done.

What the Return of the Skinny Brow Really Means for our Beauty Looks!

What the Return of the Skinny Brow Really Means for our Beauty Looks!

ANDREAS RENTZ GETTY IMAGES

Hold the tweezers: experts explain the rise of streamlined brows and whether they’re right for you too.

Harpers Bazaar: For the last decade, full, bushy brows have been upheld as the North Star to aim for with one’s beauty look. Heavily influenced by millennial models and reality stars, from Cara Delevingne to the Kardashians, the brow industry boomed thanks to this staple beauty trend. But now that Gen Z is helping to set the beauty agenda – and their nostalgic obsession with the Nineties and Noughties knows no bounds – thin brows are back in the limelight.

Laurretta Power, national brow artist and head of artistry at Benefit Cosmetics, concurs, telling us: “People are starting to favour thinner brows, much to the dismay of all the people who saw this trend the first time around and had terrible trouble trying to grow them back.” She, too, cites the zeitgeist: “Gen Z are obsessed with Nineties and Noughties films, music and fashion, and make-up looks from the decades are going crazy on TikTok,” That, alongside 20-something models like Bella Hadid and Adwoa Aboah sporting streamlined brows (and looking incredible for it) makes the revival far from surprising.

VICTOR VIRGILEGETTY IMAGES

It’s not just anecdotal, either. A new study by e-tailer LookFantastic analysed various metrics like social engagement and Google search volumes to establish this year’s key beauty trends, and found that skinny eyebrows to currently be the third biggest (behind the similarly nostalgic brown lip liner with gloss, and heavy black liner), with a 450 per cent increase in searches for the look.

MAC’s director of make-up artistry Terry Barber feels that it’s a case of counterculture beginning to snowball. The beauty visionary and trend authority tells Bazaar: “The return of the skinny brow is probably another way beauty is trying to rid itself of the generic, stencilled details that became so prevalent in the last decade when there seemed to be only one brow shape that was meant to fit all.” The ‘Instagram brow’, if you will.

In the last decade there seemed to be only one brow shape that was meant to fit all

Those tired of homogeneous beauty have been experimental with their brows. “We’ve seen a lot of manipulation of brows to look anything but classic, from the futuristically soaped-up, boyishly pushed the wrong way, or even bleached out to skin colour – much favoured by the Hackney hipsters,” Barber explains. “But there is currently a new appreciation of the arched elegance that a more streamlined, pencil-thin brow can give to the eye shape, with lots of references to the early supermodels and the Nineties wild-child coolness of a young Kate Moss or Drew Barrymore.” Indeed, there’s a certain effortlessness that makes the slim brow feel very appealing right now.

diamonds are forever show
DAVE BENETTGETTY IMAGES

The focus for 2021’s version of thinner brows is that there isn’t one

“The rule book on how your brows are meant to frame your face has pretty much been thrown out of the window,” Barber adds. “Now it’s about achieving the right attitude.” Essentially, the only non-rule rule in beauty today is ‘you do you’.

Vanita Parti, CEO and founder of Blink Brow Bar tells us, “If you have slim brows, it’s time to celebrate them”. To get the best out of skinny brows, she recommends using a precision brow pencil “to create density and length in your brows,” with a clear brow gel “to sleek them together and lift”.

But if you don’t have naturally slim brows, she says to be cautious of deliberately removing hairs for the sake of it.

“Everyone suits a different style, and balance is key,” Parti continues. “There is a science to getting the right shape, and brow mapping helps to work this out.”

Whether thick or thin, Parti feels that the overall shape should take priority in order to best balance your facial features. She suggests following this formula using a pencil: “It’s simple, place the pencil at the edge of your nose and where it hits your eyebrow is where they should start. Then swivel it from your nose to your iris – this is where the arch should be positioned. Finally, swivel again from your nose to the end of your eye and where the pencil hits the brow is where they end. It is also useful to take a concealer pencil and mark the boundaries.”

Once you (or the pros) have shaped your brows then decide whether you want a higher or flatter arch, or whether you want to style them sleek or brushed-up.

Power agrees that bespoke is best. Key to the various brow services at Benefit Cosmetics is the consultation. “We talk you through the process and advise the best brow styles for your face and how to maintain them,” she says.

If only we’d had such a service in the Nineties.
